We were in Annapolis for the weekend for a wedding. The rate we got was $ 109 which seems reasonable for downtown Annapolis. We had a room on the backside that looked over rooftops to Main St. The room was on the smaller side but not bad. The bathroom was very narrow but functional. It would have been nice if there was one more mirror in the room besides the one over the sink in the bathroom. The bed was very comfortable. Amazing location. Walking distance to everything in historic Annapolis. Just a few steps off Main St. with all its shops and restaurants. Easy walks also to the Naval Academy and the Annapolis Yacht Club and Ego Alley(the inlet where the boats come in to show off). Despite being so close to the action, it is very quiet because State Circle is so narrow that there isn’t that much traffic. It is part of Historic Inns of Annapolis which has 3 old inns(of which Robert Johnson is one). You check in at the Governor Calvert House which is on the other side of State Circle which is mildly inconvenient but not bad. You can do valet parking for $ 20 a day. They also tell you about a parking garage which is free on the weekends and about 4 blocks away. So we dropped our bags at the room and I parked at the garage, saved $ 40 and had a nice walk through an old part of town.

We checked into the Governor Calvert House, but our room was almost 80 degrees and the a/c was broken, so after I said something to the front desk they moved us over to the RJ. They comped us breakfast in the Treaty of Paris Restaurant(see my separate review) and gave us a discounted rate. They handled it promptly and professionally, which is something you don’t always see in hotels these days. The service is excellent. Rooms are well appointed and rather clean, although the room in the RJ was a bit small and the only view was a brick wall of the bldg nextdoor. You can’t ask for a better location in downtown Annapolis — everything is in walking distance! The biggest annoyance of the RJ is the front desk is over in the Calvert House, and even though it isn’t much of a walk, it would be more convenient if it were in the same bldg. Overall, though, a very nice hotel, and it makes for a great weekend visit. Wi-Fi is free, but I didn’t bother to bring my laptop, so I don’t know if it’s fast or slow. Valet parking is $ 20, worth it because parking in Annapolis is a pain and parking overnight at a garage would be more expensive.

If we return to Annapolis we will stay here again. The rooms are great and the price was reasonable.

As a resident of Annapolis’ historic district, any time we have guests, we outsource to the Robert Johnson House. The location is super-primo, and the rooms that our guests have been in all have views directly out over State Circle and the beautiful state house building and dome. The perfect part about its location is that despite being right in the center of town, it remains very quiet since State Circle is too narrow for large delivery trucks or buses. The main street in town with all the restaurants and shops is directly around the other side of the building, and the Naval Academy is only two blocks in the other direction. Pretty much the best location possible in historic Annapolis. The basic rooms, which I recommend, cost $ 89 a night, a price that speaks for itself. The rooms are well-accommodated, and the only complaint our guests have stated is that the flat-screen TV is too large. The beds are comfortable with soft sheets and real linens, not the polyester bed-covers you find at most hotel chains. This thing was built solid back in the good old days… you know, the 1700s. This is one of three hotels in the historic district run by a small LOCAL inn business called the Historic Inns of Annapolis. Since the RJH doesn’t have a front desk for itself, the check-in and out occurs at the Governor Calvert House, which is a beautiful two block walk around State Circle. Explore that house as well, built in the 1600s. It has some impressive old pictures of the city and a cool room with a glass floor that exposes the original foundation that dates back even earlier. There are lots of fun B&Bs in Annapolis, but if you’re just looking for a great quality room in an amazing location, it doesn’t get much better than this.
