My girlfriend and I have been here several times and we really enjoy the food here over other phở joints we’ve been to, so far everything we have ordered has been fantastic plus this place is always empty every time we go so it’s almost like no one knows about this place still but it’s been there for a while now her and I will be going back for sure

the phở is ok if you are really craving it. at least the portions are big. but the soup is too«clean». there isnt enough grease in the soup, which i think makes phở taste much better. i definitely could not finish my small bowl. we also ordered some tofu appetizer, and while it was good, it was just deep fried tofu so nothing spectacular. and then also some shrimp cocktail thing. so overpriced. it tasted like pre-cooked shrimp just heated for. about 10 for $ 10. not worth it.

My wife is Vietnamese so I have eaten a lot of good homemade Vietnamese food. Needless to say it is usually a little disappointing when I go out to these restaurants. I too like Brendan went when they just opened and wasn’t wowed, but it was good enough to give a second shot and VERY clean. I have to say that I have been back at least 5 times since and the food seems to have gotten better every time. I can now give it a big WOW! The food has that home cooked feel to it now and is really fresh compared to most other places. As I said before the place is very clean, which is a big deal in my family. I would definitely recommend this place and am quickly becoming a regular.

So far so good at this place, I may have to try it again! All my food was nice and fresh tasting unlike other places, What I ordered: Beef Stew with Egg Noodle instead of rice noodles Summer Roll Fresh Lime Soda Pros: Food was fresh, summer rolls seemed like they were just made when I ordered it since it was nice a warm and soft, unlike other places who pre make them refrigerate them and serve them throughout the day. The beef stew on the menu comes with rice noodles, so I asked them to change it to egg noodles which I am accustomed to, flavor of the broth was ok, but needed more spices, the beef was nice and tender which was good. The Lime soda was perfect, not to sweet and not to tart! perfectly made BTW place was clean from front to back and even the restrooms were in good condition so that is always a plus in my book. I will be back to try other items on the menu. Place is definitely placed in a strange area next to a hardware store and a no name gas station and a little quickie mart type place. Plenty of parking spots too

I chose this place to introduce my children to Phở. Fortunately, they have a children’s menu and my 2 youngest were able to get Phở with Chicken, while my oldest opted for beef tendon. We all enjoyed our soup and the only problem I had was that my brisket was a little on the tough side. Our service; however, was excellent. I also thought the iced coffee with condensed milk was a little stronger than I usually take it but overall not bad. Lastly we checked out the restrooms. Very nice and clean… it was actually very pretty even though the majority of the restaurant is very simply decorated. We will eat here again. I agree with a previous poster that it is in an awkward place, but it is close to my daughter’s daycare(easy for me).

This restaurant is in a very awkward place but also very conveniently located for me. I live in the industrial area of Springfield/Alexandria and we do not have very many food choices that are a quick hop and skip away. Our choices are really narrowed down to fast food so what will it be Wendy’s or McDonald’s tonight? When we found this phở place it was purely by accident. The phở isn’t the best in comparison to all of the phở joints in the area but it’s good. In fact, it’s the best thing they have on their menu. Their cooked dishes are a little lacking and their spring rolls are less than desirable. But when you’re craving phở, it does the trick. The restaurant is nice and clean and the staff is always extremely friendly. I would say it’s a great place to have a meal for those who are live close by and is a nice local spot. But wouldn’t be worth the drive for someone who is going out of their way. The thing that I do appreciate the most about them is when they serve their Summer Rolls, it is served with the black bean dipping sauce which is how it is normally served before the americanized peanut sauce was introduced. In response to those reviewers comparing to the Korean Restaurants a few minutes down the road, yes, the Korean restaurants are delicious and you have a great variety to choose from than phở. But Korean restaurants are by no means a quick and easy meal in comparison to Phở. Plus, Annandale is a pain in the pah-tootie to park.

Tonight was my third ever after-normal-dinner-hour visit to Hong Anh, and as consistent with my previous later night visits, Hong Anh was clean, calm, well air conditioned, and downright peaceful. Quite a change from many of the other Phở restaurants in the area that can be a circus at times. I ordered my usual combination phở tonight, as I do at most phở joints. The server promptly took our orders, and the cooks even more promptly whipped up our meals. What happened next was pretty hilarious, as a server emerged from the kitchen downright struggling to carry a tray that held two of the largest bowls I remember seeing. These bowls were ginormous! I had actually thought the two men(the only other patrons at this hour) sitting adjacent from us had ordered the Large size bowls. It turns out those bowls – the size of typical«Large» orders at other places – were the small bowls here. My order of a large bowl was in reality a humongous bowl. The soup was fresh, tasty, and comforting. The accompanying vegetables were fresh and we were given plenty. All the usual cast of characters were in the soup – the different cuts of meat, the tripe, onions, cilantro, tendon… the whole gang. It was just a no-nonsense good, fresh, solid bowl of phở that hit the spot. So, why is this place always empty? Well, I pondered it for a while after eating tonight and decided they suffer from«Horrible Location Syndrome.» Truly, Hong Anh is what you would generally call«in the middle of nowhere.» It’s not on the way to a shopping plaza where you’d run your errands. It’s not in a touristy location. It’s not next to your favorite café. And, it’s not clustered with other restaurants with the potential to serve overflow clientele. It just sits in a random piece of land somehwere along Backlick Road, next to a few gas pumps and a convenience store. You’d have to pretty much go out of your way to get there, and that’s why I’m guessing not many people choose to do that for a bowl of soup on a given weeknight. Regardless, I like this place. For me, it’s a little hidden gem that serves good, fresh food in a very clean, relaxing, and quiet environment. If you’re up for some Vietnamese food later in the night(they’re open until 9:30PM), and you are looking for both quality and quantity, Hong Anh Restaurant is your place.

Location is a little surprising(okay, a little awkward), as noted by the other two reviewers. I had phở, as did two of the other members of my party, while my sister went with something called«shaken beef cubes»(served with rice, sauce, etc.). Phở was pretty bomb. The broth was very clean, very tasty. I like phở, but I’ve had my fair share of MSG-laden bowls of grease. This phở was definitely not. The oddly named shaken beef cubes were tender and sweet, also very tasty. Price was about $ 8 per person, but we decided it was worth the money. Interior was classy, waitresses attentive and generous when we asked for more cilantro and bean sprouts.

I concur with the previous reviewer. Pass… I have better elsewhere — pass, drive a few miles to get great Korean food or find another Vietnamese restaurant elsewhere. I ordered the combination phở — the basic dish that every Vietnamese restaurant prepares and serves, it serves as a good indicator of the other dishes. Based on the phở, I will not return, nor will recommend the restaurant. First of all, the broth is nondescript. The essence of any good phở(or Japanese ramein) is the broth — it must be distinct, flavorful. The noodles were clumpy(if its an apt description) — so much that there were remnants stuck on the bottom of the bowl. The«combination» portion of the phở was very meager — the complimentary dish of bean sprouts and mint had only one sprig of mint. The décor is modern — very new, but the essence of any restaurant is the food. My recommendation is GOELSEWHERE. Annandale is renown for its selection of outstanding Korean food so it was a curious site to see a new Vietnamese restaurant(along with a hardware store and convenience/liquor store). I had a late lunch after picking up my car from Backlick Service next door(see my review — they now service domestic).

As luck would have it — or maybe unluck — we somehow ended up coming on opening day, so this may be qualified. Service was warm and friendly, but a bit of a mess. Orders were coming out wrong and orders were being directed to the wrong tables. One table next to us ended up with the wrong meat with the rice dish, then the right meat but in a vermicelli dish(that was actually supposed to be for another table), then finally the right meat and rice dish. I guess you can’t beat 2 free dishes though. They did apologize profusely for the mix-ups. The kitchen shows some promise, but food was mixed. The grilled pork and spring rolls in the bun cha were good and there was plenty of both, but there wasn’t nearly enough nuoc cham to use with the vermicelli and it was really dry. I would have also liked to see more lettuce and herbs. The same scarcity of sauce made the mi xao dry. The ‘seafood’ portion of the mi xao was just shrimp which is okay I guess, but the veggies were bordering on mediocre Chinese takeout overdone stirfriedness. They gave plenty of egg noodles, but I think the cooking oil temperature was too low since both the fried egg noodles and the fried tofu we got were both super greasy. At least the tofu was pretty tasty. Seeing as it was opening day I don’t hold the service problems against them and I’d be up to revisit. The kitchen shows some promise so I hope they can work out the kinks. Still, considering the proximity to Eden Center, Present, or Saigon City, I’d probably just as well go elsewhere.
