I have ridden on many bicycle trails in other parts of the world, and this was one of the worst. I started in the first section near Pohick road. It was unmarked for all intents and purposes. The surface was terrible. It took me half an hour to find the beginning of the second section which was also unmarked and I immediately lost my way near Springfield. I found only one trail side map. Maybe the later sections(if I can ever find them) are in better condition and provide more useful information, but I doubt it.

Best hidden gem in Annandale… and one of the best residential trails ever. Lucky to live close enough to walk this trail every weekend. The trail is a mix of paved, rocky and hard mud surface, great for mountain biking, walking and running. Not ideal for road bikes but the terrain deters this trail from becoming a cycle highway like the W&OD trail which the CCC trail connects to. Special thanks to Gerry Connolly for making this 40 miles of beautiful outdoor space possible for everyone to enjoy.

I walked from Tobin Road to the south end at Occoquan Regional Park. This is a fantastic suburban trail. Most of it is paved, or well maintained gravel. Today, due to Friday’s very heavy rain, 4 of the Fairweather crossings were covered with water. I removed my shoes and crossed in 4 to 6 inches of water. Lots of wild life; deer, squirrels, Great Blue Heron, indigo Bunting, Bard Owl just to name a few.

Fairfax County’s Cross County Trail is fantastic! it’s a walking and biking trail that runs from Springfield, through Annandale, Fairfax to Vienna and eventually connects with the W &OD trail near Lawyers Rd. Traveling the CCT is a beautiful way to see the variety of stream valleys in Fairfax County and a good opportunity to view a cross section of the county’s topography and development. You can access both the Vienna Metro and the Franconia/Springfield Metro from connectors to the trail. You can access the Washington and Old Dominion Trail from the CCT.
