I first went to Asian Fuzion Café, because I liked the name of the place. I thought it was pretty good. Then I met an old friend while there and found out he was a regular and he also liked it. Since then I have been back and gotten a little braver with my ordering. I have found that whatever I get here, I like it, including the waitperson, Amy. The owner, Pat. is very nice. I’m a fan for sure!

I know, I know, fusion sucks right? Eh maybe usually. I liked it here though. The waitress Amy was on the ball. I asked about the special wonton noodle soup that I had seen online on their menu and she explained it was a lunch item but that they would be happy to make it up for us no problem. Definitely happy news. In a flash we had tall glasses of ice water and a pot of hot tea. We ordered a bit of everything as we were starving. We got eggrolls, potstickers, the wonton noodle soup and some basil fried rice. The eggrolls were odd, stuffed with meat very similar to a potsticker. Tastyish but just not expected. I noticed after they also have veggie eggrolls which may be more my thing. My mom really liked the eggroll we got though. The potstickers were standard and therefore tasty. I am a huge fan of fried dumplings and these met my expectations and I quite enjoyed. The soup was huge, more than enough for two and leftovers. Full of chicken broth, egg noodles, wontons, bok choy, crab, fish balls, shrimp, cilantro, scallions and shallots. The broth was excellent and it made a great share. The basil fried rice was my favorite item. Basil, peppers, onion and juicy chunks of chicken in a very zesty version of fried rice. It was absolutely delicious. Definitely a nice plate, plenty for two to share if they include an app. We ended up taking home a lot of leftovers, plenty for each of us to have more of everything. The owner was there and swung by for a really nice chat. I like that. Our waitress was also super attentive and friendly. Overall, it was a good value for solid and tasty food. I will go back.

Okay, so I’ll admit I didn’t expect that much from a place called«Asian Fuzion». The menu is a mix of Chinese and Thai, and on the day we went, the special was Phở. The restaurant was clean, but there are two large screen TVs at either end of the restaurant. They were playing one of the Narnia movies with the sound on — no thanks. I ordered the Red Curry with chicken, and asked for it «very spicy». The waitress did the usual look of shock and making sure I was«sure» I wanted it very spicy. I just wanted a normally spiced Thai curry, but when it came, it was very mild. Certainly not spicy enough to warrant even a cursory«are you sure?». The curry was also very sweet. At $ 12 it was the same price as Marnee Thai but not nearly as good. Skip this place for Thai food.

We went this morning, figuring we’d try out their breakfast menu. Well, that was a fail, because apparently they don’t do breakfast any more, and they have later opening hours.(11am). There is a note, but that note is on the inside of the door for patrons who have already eaten there.(?) So we ended up eating lunch. I still think Thai food is their strength, the Chinese food was ok. I felt like I was eating Panda Express though. Not to knock Panda Express, sometimes you have a craving for fast food-Chinese food. Which Asian Fuzion delivers on, just don’t expect anything more and you won’t be disappointed.

It’s a very nice menu but I was highly disappointed to find out they use fish sauce in all their Thai dishes. So this menu just ending up being a boring Chinese take out.

I guess this place just opened; it was all shiny new empty booths when I checked it out for lunch today. But I got the Yellow Potato Curry and man! was it good! It had the subtle flavors you expect from Thai food, but wasn’t so subtle that my big dumb American taste buds couldn’t figure out what was going on.(I do have that problem at some of the lauded Thai places around here.) Somewhere between the time I placed my order and the time my dish came out I forgot that the description had mentioned pineapples. There is really no other experience like biting down on a piping hot juicy chunk of pineapple when you were expecting a potato. It was trippy, and really good. Did I say that already? The coffee was also surprisingly tasty for a restaurant of this kind. I look forward to trying some of the other items on the menu… it’s kind of a mish-mash of American breakfast foods, some with an Asian spin, and Chinese and Thai dishes for lunch and dinner. As I mentioned above, I’m no authority on Thai food, so I’d be interested to hear what others have to say about this place. It’s on Washtenaw right next to Honeybaked Ham, so go there and see. This local yokel was impressed, though.
