I arrived late in the morning so the donut case was a little on the light side. I chose one of each so we had a total of 4 to try. The red velvet donut was as close to perfection as one can get. I took them to go but there is a dining area if you want to stay awhile. Very friendly staff and clean area. Definitely recommend this place for your sugar fix!

Where have you been all my life! These are the real deal y’all. The donut shop is tucked away and after moving here in June, driving pass daily only discovered them today! The guy who served us was really friendly(he’s from VA, explains it, supper friendly) Price is really good and the building seems clean. Maybe needs a better eye catching sign outside. Could have had me hooked from June :)

This is not a donut shop. This is a bagel shop with a donut case. Nowhere on Unilocal or online do they tell you they close the donut case when they run out of donuts(apparently this happens quite early). We called them 4 times on our 30 minute drive over to check. Twice the phone was busy and twice it just kept ringing. Needless to say we won’t be going back.

I have driven by here so many times and I finally stopped in with such high expectations. I waited for over 5 minutes at the counter before an employee came over from CJ’s bagels to help me. Then she seemed rude and rushed. There was only 1 red velvet, 1 Devils food, and 3 vanilla cake doughnuts left. And they are open until 8pm. Other disappointed customers were leaving empty handed. The shop was fairly clean and busy. The doughnut was good, moist and the frosting was a delicious buttercream. However they are expensive at $ 1.80 each for a doughnut. Overall I am not really impressed by Topped Doughnuts but I may give them another chance in the future. 10 am and no doughnuts left. Really.

Yummy! Thankfully I don’t live in the area or I would be a frequent customer and my waist line does not need any additionaly help! Dare I say that I like their donuts better than some cupcakes? Sorry, no photo to share of what I ordered(S’mores), I devoured it so quickly. I really did try to make it last, but I couldn’t help myself. It was so light and fluffy and not overly sweet. I felt they had a nice selection(how many choices do you really need?) some basic cake and yeast and then some fancier varities and those rotate by the day. The downside, they share their staff with CJ Bagel and you may be standing there waiting for awhile to get your donut, so don’t expect to just bop in and out during a weekday morning. There was a girl that came in and saw that there were already two of us in line, she waited for a minute and then turned around and left. Ok, enjoying my sugar rush now… hope you enjoy yours!

I would never call myself a doughnut connoisseur, in fact I have never really been a huge doughnut or is it donut, person. I always considered them something kind of gross and greasy that you picked up at a gas station on a road trip because they were cheap fuel. A co-worker brought in Topped Doughnuts the other day and I must say the glazed I tried was the best I have ever had, including my trip to VooDoo Donuts in Portland. So good I would say I crave another.

I went here on a weekday morning around 10 and there were only 2 donuts left… disappointed. I would assume a place would keep the selection fresh and abundant until the lunch hour, but perhaps the locals know better! It is a weird set up being connected to a bagel shop, and the service was decent at best.

First of all, this is not really a shop… this is connected to CJ bagels and is more like a counter in their store. There is no employee for this donut place, you just stand in front of the counter and wait for someone from CJ Bagels to come assist you. The donut themselves are pretty good, but nothing amazing. The selection is also very limited. The seating atmosphere is nice, it is just the CJ Bagel seating area. I had the Buttermilk Bacon donut and Holland Crème donut. They were unique and tasty.

We arrived at 10 a.m. one Saturday morning, and they had a handful of doughnuts remaining in the display case. The gal working the cash register was not friendly. I did manage to purchase one of the last doughnuts they had left, and it was underwhelming.

I have been addicted to their doughnuts ever since my students told me about this cute little boutique. The storefront is pretty small and easy to miss for those searching from the street. The interior is sizable, as a score of tables is scattered across a shared dining area with CJ’s Bagels located on the other side of the store. I used to make a run to King Pin Doughnuts during my days at Berkeley late into the night. Here, I have to be an early riser as Topped is open from 6am-2pm(6:30am on Saturdays), and closed on Sundays. I’ve tried a variety of doughnuts from here and even though not all were 5 stars fantastic, everything still embodied elements of deliciousness. Several outstanding characteristics of their doughnuts are 1) the strong, unsurpassed buttermilk aroma, 2) soft, crispy outer texture that is very easy to cut into, 3) moist and moderately dense cake-like interior that bursts with your flavor of choice. I usually buy a few at a time and the fresh buttermilk aroma would instantaneously fill my car. Those that are interested should be warned and to inhale at your own risk. It may cause non-stop drooling until your first bite. I won’t be able to review all the doughnuts I’ve tried, but here is the top three that I considered 5 stars. My favorite is the Cherry Glazed Doughnut that reeks with a light but pointed cherry flavor. A close second is the Red Velvet Doughnut that comes with a cream frosting that is not too sweet. Bacon Maple Bar is a knockout, where the sinful bacon flavor really stood out to nicely complement the smooth maple spread. As a quick tip, the cherry flavor will really resonate if you have time to let it sit for a while. Service is friendly, approachable, and responsive. Prices are categorized by Gourmet, Premium, and Original flavors. In bulk, four of each will cost you $ 14.04. I still have to try the Samoa made with coconut chocolate caramel on the next visit. Quality, service, and price-wise, Topped Doughnuts is one place worth visiting in Central Iowa.

Holy cow! Talk about amazing doughnuts! The bacon maple bar is a knockout and the Samoa(coconut chocolate caramel, like the girl scout cookie) is awesome too! My only complaints are that they are far away in Ankeny, and that they aren’t open on Sundays. :)

Skip Dunkin’ Donuts and make your way over to Topped Doughnuts. This shop is doing wonderful things to elevate the humble doughnut. The display case is filled with both traditional flavors(cake, yeast risen, jelly filled, etc) as well as creative ones(red velvet, maple bacon bar, cookies n cream, etc). The doughnuts are soft and light in texture. Furthermore, they taste fresh and aren’t oily or greasy. My current favorites are the glazed twist, the cinnamon sugar twist, and the Bavarian cream. The maple bacon bar, red velvet, samoa(remember Girl Scout cookies?), and raspberry bismarck are also great. Topped Doughnuts opens at 6am Wednesdays-Fridays and 6:30am Saturdays. These doughnuts are worth getting out of bed early for. You can tell customers enjoy Topped Doughnuts as flavors can sell out fast. This past Saturday, the raspberry bismarcks were sold out before 8am. Not to worry though as there were still plenty of alluring flavors to choose from. Check their website as the flavors vary throughout the week. Recommend!
