The Depot Grill

Just for everybody’s information, the Depot is no longer a burger place! I had no idea they had changed, so the last time we went we were a little disappointed. It is now a burrito place in the (sort of) style of Qdoba or Chipotle. I had a burrito bowl and it was okay. The brown rice was kind of crunchy, and my memory of the rest of it is a little hazy. My impression was, however, colored by the fact that I was expecting a burger and was kind of disappointed.

I do not go to the nearby college. I visit the area many times through out the year and have done so for the past 20 years. Finding quality food in these parts can be a challenge. This place makes my top five. The staff was very nice when we were there on a quiet Saturday afternoon. They take care in their food selection and preparation. The fries were well made. The salad bar was great. My wrap was fresh. My wife’s veggie burger was a little «soft», but that is the way non frozen, fresh veggie burgers usually are. They try to use as much locally sourced food as possible, «farm to table» style. It is a shame that most places around here just need to pile on more food in order to get better reviews. I prefer quality over quantity, and this place delivers. They have a nice out door porch to sit on that we took advantage of during a beautiful spring day. It is a nice quiet place to sit outside and eat.
Granted, if this place was in my usual downtown Chicago area, it would get four stars. In Steuben County it gets five.

One step in the door and realized the place was basically an extension of the campus dining hall… they even accept meal plans. the food was just ok, got the veggie burger and it was a homemade attempt at a veggie burger but it was so soft with no texture, that I felt like I was eating mashed black bean paste. I got sweet potato fries, and they were just ok, cold by the time we got our food, which was about a 30 minute wait after we ordered… for burgers… the outside of the restuarant looks really nice, and authentic, but the inside is dingy and dim, and contributed to the college-​kid feel also. probably wont go again
