McFarland is a beautiful park with a small lake suitable for fishing, picnic sites, a paved walking trail and what I call a prairie walking trail. The Story County conservation office is located here and is open during the week and is a good source for material for what outdoor activities are available in the area.

Pretty! It’s wooded, has a great field with trails, is dog friendly, and is quite large. I enjoyed going to a bridal shoot here. Only downside I can think of is not the park’s fault, but was still creepy. Tons of mosquitos ready to bite flesh. Other than that, the park is gorgeous.

I have been going to McFarland Lake for decades and the county has done a great job of creating a great place to walk and bike. Spend some time at McFarland Park and you will have a great time.

This is a really neat park north east of Ames. It’s the home of the Story County Conservation Center and a lot of classes and programming. There are some deceptively long hiking trails here that will let you traverse the various biomes of the state of Iowa. There are wooded, riparian and native prarire areas along trails immediately adjacent to the park and it also serves as a great launching point and connector for the Skunk River Greenbelt system of trails that continue to the north. There are primitive campsites and mutli-use hiking and biking trails. There is actually a lot to do outside in Story County, it’s just not obvious & McFarland Park is a great place to get acquainted.
