These cake balls are worth the drive from Sugar Land; they are that good! I have not tried one that I didn’t like and the texture is on point.

We got our wedding cake from Norma’s, as it was offered as part of our package through Oakwind Bed & Breakfast. We had our cake-testing at Oakwind, and each and every flavor was AMAZING! It was so difficult to choose, but we went with a white cake, strawberry filling, and champagne buttercream. We designed the cake, and it came out even more beautiful than expected. Not only was our wedding cake delicious, but it was GORGEOUS as well. I would absolutely recommend Norma’s to anyone who needed a cake!

I’m really puzzled at the high stars here. First I was not impressed with this place at all. The décor, the variety and service were mediocre at best. There was very little to offer, the display case had some cake balls and a few cookies and that was it. I ordered the cake balls(several flavors) to take home. They tasted waxy and almost all the flavors tasted similar. The red velvet stood out as tastier than the others but I’ve honestly had way better. Here are the main issues: the chocolate coating is too thick and it pools at the bottom and the flavor is meh, the cake inside is pretty lackluster in flavor because as I stated they all tasted the same. The outside of this place seems like it would be filled with goodies and when you go inside and you have almost nothing to chose from. My last issue the Hispanic lady that waited on me didn’t even know what a walnut was. I asked her if the carrot cake balls had nuts in them, and she didn’t know what I was saying. This is important because if someone has a nut allergy and you don’t answer them correctly or even understand them, how can you answer? I took the cake balls home to my family and no one liked them. The remaining balls ended up in the trash can. Complete waste of money and the only reason it’s not a 1 star is the red velvet saved them. I’m an active Unilocaler and have tons of reviews and I don’t know the owner so you can trust my review.

I can remember a mere few years ago when I couldn’t recommend this place highly enough. I credit them for starting the cake ball craze… they’ve been selling them for YEARS, way before any of their competitors. Unfortunately, a LOT has changed in just the past 2 – 3 years. For starters, they’ve changed ownership… so the namesake Norma is gone. It may just be a coincidence, but with her departure, I noticed the cake balls got smaller(the used to be golf ball sized, now they are more like ping pong ball sized) and the prices got higher! It wasn’t but 3 – 4 years ago that the cake balls were 65 – 75 cents each. Now they are $ 1.75 to $ 2 each! That’s more than double in a few years time, folks! I will give them that ingredients have gone up in the past few years, but not more than double(and remember, they’ve gotten smaller in size during this time)! Disappointing! The decorated cookies used to be around 75 cents, and now they’ve gone up to approx. $ 2 each as well. They are super yummy, though. The customer service is definitely NOT what it used to be when Rachel ran the front counter. It’s now just a variety of staff members who seem ambivalent about being there. All in all, everything’s gone downhill a bit but I’ll still occasionally treat myself & my family when my pocketbook permits… but boy do I miss the good ‘ol days!

BEST cake balls anywhere! This was the first place I had ever had one and no other cake balls have ever compared. All of their flavors are amazing and they are a pretty big size. My favorite is red velvet. I usually get a few different ones because I don’t come very often. It can get pricy but it is worth it!

If your are in Alvin — go here! I have only had the cake balls, but in my opinion they are the best in the Houston area. They have a huge selection as well — everything from Andes mint(which is really excellent) to an Elvis(peanut butter and banana). I personally like the red velvet and the Italian cream, but honestly, I am not sure you can go wrong. They are about a $ 1.00 per, which I don’t think it terrible considering the quality. I can only imagine that Norma’s other assortment of baked goods are just as excellent. I will be giving them a try if I can ever avoid the cake balls…

Norma does really great cakes and cake balls. She did my wedding cake back in 2007 and we had white cake with a pineapple filling and buttercream frosting. It was delicious even a year later when we ate the top layer! Norma’s cakeballs are also SO addictive! Beware — if you try them once, you’ll be hooked. The only reason she didn’t get 5 stars from me is because my wedding cake had the wrong colors on it(always take a color swatch) and she doesn’t always have the cake ball flavors that I’d want available.

When she said«they have cake balls» I said, «turn the car around!» I’m not leaving Texas without trying this specialty; are you kidding? I had just read an article about this Texas phenom sweeping the state. They were comparing them to the California cupcake craze. So, I had to see for myself! Norma’s had just closed but our passenger knew the people and they agreed we could come in and purchase cake balls if we had exact change. I knew I could do that, so in we went. What a seriously cute place this was! This little bakery/pastry shop was also a mini-boutique that also had a few tables set up to dine in. I would’ve looked around more and certainly stayed longer had the place not just closed. It struck me as an ideal spot for a small baby or bridal shower, or an intimate afternoon coffee with the girls. But, I came for the cake balls, so here’ the story. Cake balls are made from the leftover tops of cakes that have been baked for decorating purposes. Rather than eat it all or throw it away, people began to squeeze this into balls(sometimes adding filling ingredients along the way such as coconut) then dip these into chocolate or white chocolate candy coating. The balls resemble giant truffles in a manner of speaking. I asked Rachel to give me a dozen of the best flavors so we had an assortment to try. It was all I could do to not bite into one the drive home; but I waited. I was wanting to like these so badly but unfortunately I didn’t. The outside coating was way, way too sweet for me. That’s saying a lot since I’m known as the girl who will eat M&Ms for breakfast! Almost nothing is too sweet for me. The compacted cake filling was so dense that there was no cake-like texture left to it. That was not what I had expected. I took another bite of my German Chocolate one and no, still too much. Just couldn’t eat it at all. So, I tried a taste of what other people were having. Nope. I was very disappointed to not have liked these at all. And thats through no fault of the bakery; it’s just me. I would not hesitate to recommend this place for fun. I’d go back to look around the little boutique some more. There was that Hello Kitty bracelet that I didn’t buy after all. I guess I’ll be sticking with cupcakes from here on out. Written in my travelogue: Cake balls drool, cupcakes rule! Sorry, cake balls, you lose! But, Norma’s place is a winner!
