Kelton St Laundromat

DO NOT GO HERE!!! Fifteen of the washers and dryers are broken and have been for MONTHS. That’s right FIFTEEN. And the machines that aren’t broken? They work 50% of the time. At $ 2.75 a load, that’s too much money to risk considering you don’t know if the machine will even work. I honestly wonder if the owners have ever been in the place since it’s opened. It’s quite clear that they don’t care AT ALL about maintaining this crap hole!!!

2) $ 2.50/wash, 25¢/5 mins dry
Pros: 24 washers, 18 dryers
Cons: Price, no waiting area, no attendants, old machines, dirty floors. High temp dry is really low temp, time on machines are inaccurate.
Don’t plan to return to this location, had to try it at least once. Ended up taking an hour and 45 minutes from washer start to last dryer cycle to do one load…

I sort of hate myself for spending money here, but it’s so close that I continue to do so. Let’s face it, if it weren’t for the location, there’s no way I’d set foot in here, it’s a hole. It’s dirty, pricey, and the dryers are awful. There’s a few washers that are pretty nice, but half of the time things are broken or jammed. I have a fear of my clean clothes falling onto the floor. When so much as a sock does I briefly consider either rewashing it or incinerating it. Luckily it’s close to my apartment because it’s awful to sit in and wait, crappy ventilation. So to sum it up, points for being close. That is all. I suppose that leaves room for improvement.

I remember coming down here to do laundry when I was a kid. This place is decent (hey, it was in the same building that I’ve lived in so you couldn’t beat that!)
They used to have a soda machine, but the local college students kept breaking into it so it was removed.
In response to the person who said that there were no laundry carts… They had laundry carts before, but the dang college students kept stealing them! Laundry carts are not cheap! It’s a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest of us.
Clothes not dry? SIT THERE AND WATCH YOUR LAUNDRY LIKE A HAWK! Those dang college students will take your laundry out, dry their clothes in your dryer, take it back out, then put your laundry back in to dry their clothes on your dime!
This laundromat is unattended so you’ll have to keep an eye on your laundry!
This place doesn’t have air conditioning so with all of the dryers going, it can turn into an oven in the summer.
It also «closes» at 10PM, but they won’t throw you out if you’re not done. The door just locks at 10PM and cannot be opened from the outside although it can still be opened from the inside.

The good:
The place is reasonably clean, has some nice new washers, the prices aren’t terrible.
The bad:
The driers are old and the smaller ones don’t do a very good job. But I could get over that. What I couldn’t get over was the lack of laundry carts. This is the first laundromat I’ve ever been to that had no way for me to transfer my laundry between the washers, dryers, and the folding table. I had to carry a pile of clothes in my hands. And since dropping half of my freshly washed clothes on the floor defeats the purpose of doing laundry this place gets a one star rating.
I will give 4 stars if they get laundry cart, 5 stars if they improve the dryer situation.
In other notes: the place is coin-​op so get your quarters ready.

The age-​old question: When does a boy become a man? Is it at thirteen, during the first hormonal bloom of adolescence or at sixteen when those hormones acquire a drivers license? Perhaps it is at eighteen when the boy’s mother sends him into the world with a jug of Tide and a tearful injunction to «Sort your colors!» But I, ever the late-​bloomer, put away childish things at twenty-​eight when I gave up my wish for a pool table and started lusting after a washer and dryer of my own.
Much like my attempt at the perfect metaphor, however, true manhood remains elusive: I am still dependent on the laundries of others. I am fortunate that my building has one washer and one dryer but on Sunday mornings, they are frequently engaged and I am forced to seek sudsy comfort elsewhere.
In the interest of disclosure, I will say that I have never laundered so much as a dish towel at the Kelton St. Laundry although I have twice walked in with a sack full of clothes and the best of intentions. My first time was frustrated by a dearth of empty machines and a failure of desire. A month later, I aborted my second attempt when I decided that the Kelton St. Laundry is the type of place you take your sheets on Sunday morning after having an assignation with someone who looked great on Saturday night but who, by the light of day, makes you vow abstinence if only the tests come back negative.
On that Sunday morning, I bore not sheets encrusted with the previous night’s ardor but the remains of my week’s honest toil. I cast my eyes about me, searching for a free machine. To my left, I noticed a pile of clothes spilling out of a dryer with a broken door latch. On my right, I saw a large pile of underwear, seemingly abandoned, thrown haphazardly onto a windowsill. My sneakers stuck to the floor and in the back, someone – or. .. some *thing* – snoozed on the floor, its ragged breathing soaring above the din of agitation, extraction, and centrifugal force. Friends, I’m sorry to report that here my resolve deserted me and I fled the premises.
But luck and pluck triumphed in the end. Around the corner and up the street I found a second laundry, this one clean and bright and welcoming. Here, my arms weary and my back crooked, my burden dropped from my shoulders and my wash found succor.
Where, you ask, is this oasis, this shining beacon? Sorry but I’m not saying. As anyone who’s had to rely on public laundries can tell you, a good coin-​op is hard to find and I’m keeping this place to myself.
