Allentown is now home to three excellent Dominican restaurants. Punta Cana and Dominican family restaurant on Tilghman/West Union are excellent for cheap, delicious, big portion food. So naturally, when we stopped by El Rey, they had a high standard to match. In short, they did not disappoint. Excellent Dominican food. Fresh, home made pastelito(the Dominican version of Empanadas, meat/cheest filled puffed pastry), fresh juices(I recommend the tamarind) that is excellent for washing down wholesome, Dominican comfort food. For entrees, there are a wide variety of choices. You can have pork chops cooked in a traditional creole sauce(tomato based sauce with the trinity of bell peppers, celery and onions), or fried chicken(very different from the usual fried chicken you are used to. It has a delightful herb dusted crust that covers fresh, juicy pieces of chicken). They come with Rice and beans, and the beans do not come from a can that are reheated. You must also try the pernil(whole roasted pork with crispy skin), which is a must for those who love fatty, falling of the bone pork. They also have barbecued ribs slow cooked in a wonderful sauce that does not reek of cliched, store brought BBQ sauces. And of course, you must try the Mofongos(a classic Afro-Puerto rican/Dominican fare, mashed pickled plantains with meat/seafood broth). They are excellent and can match any Mofongo made in the Dominicans. And finally, you can try their desserts. Home made tres leches cake or flan. A wholecome four course meal for two will not exceed 40 $ and you will have plenty of left overs too! On a street, which is punctuated by several overpriced, pretentious restaurants, El Rey Del Mofongo stands out as a brilliant representation of Dominican food and a gastronomic destination you must try out.

I took my mom for a fun ride, ended up in this lovely town. Drove around, my first time here, there is a lot to see. Unfortunately the Liberty Bell spot was closed. The hunger strike and using Unilocal to find a spot to eat I found this place. And of course, I can’t go wrong with Domincan food. I had the Mofongo it was good. The Baberque ribs were deliciously cooked and soft. The food portions were big. Customer service was excellent. Ana really made me feel like I was home.

This is Allentown’s best Dominican food. Ana and Antonio are the owners and are very friendly and accomodating. If you want something right just talk to them– They will accomodate you!!!

I thought this place was delicious. The rice was so tasty, beans were great, and the meat wonderful. The service was quite friendly and everything was for a very good price and generous portions. I’ll definitely be back.

Tasty treats! This place has a ton of dishes and the prices can’t be beat. I thought the service was totally fine. Our food was brought out in a timely manner and the waiters were nice and responsive.

Well this place has its days… I have eaten here several times and most of them are good then again I had those merrhh not so good moments. The one thing you have to know is the service is just bad, plain simple bad service. I love from here the BBQ chicken its always perfection! The mofongo has been so so, and as far the rest just simple comfort typical lantin food. Now the selection of natural juices is delicious and my favorite is the Tamarind one: D
