They have authentic Swedish snus, and I have a tough time trying to find snus around here. Nevertheless it is a very interesting shop with influences of Scotland. Nevertheless, the people who run the shop are incredibly friendly and helpful for getting what you want. There is a vape store next door to the place, but I can’t really comment on that. It’s open late on weekends if you are getting cigars and it is late. Overall, I think that their stock of cigars are excellent, and I bet that they’ll be able to acquire Cuban cigars very soon. The place may appear disorganized and messy, but I think that doesn’t matter. I was able to finally find the Swedish General Snus and they have always stocked both the white and mint regular sized snus pouches. Nice store, nice people, and nice selection of tobacco products, particularly for the cigar connoisseurs.

Have been here in the past and was never as disappointed as I was today. 5 men sat around smoking cigars while I looked for help. When I finally asked someone, their answers were short and unhelpful. Felt like I was barging in on someone’s private smoking club. I guess I will buy my items on line instead.

Great, large selection! Staff seems fairly knowledgable. Free lighter refills with your purchase. Down side, there isn’t anywhere to sit and enjoy your cigar in the shop.

Decided to take my wife to Old town for the day. One of the first places we stopped was here so I could find a cigar to smoke while drinking a beer. As we walked in there were two people in the store. Not sure if they were both employees or not as I was never greeted. I said«how ya doing» to the first gentleman who promptly looked at me like I was from a different planet(I assure you I’m not). After looking at some of the interesting trinkets they have I made my way to the humidor. The selection was ok, the prices not outrageous but fitting for a tourist town. As I made my selection(an A Fuente) I made my way to the register. I politely gave the cashier a «how are ya» which was met with a blank stare. I’ve hardly experienced worst customer service anywhere else much less a specialty shop which are normally inviting and warm to their customers. Nothing against their cigars or products but when you treat people like dirt you don’t get more than 1 star. Clean up your act or hire better employees. I’ll take my money else where next time I’m downtown.

Since I’m not a smoker, my review of The Sottish Merchant might be a little low. If I were a smoker, I’m sure the flavor of exotic cigars and pipe tobacco would fill my review like my grandfather’s pipe, packed with smoky richness. But since I ‘m not a smoker, I tend to focus on all of this shops cool trinkets. It has ties, scarves, and walking sticks-everything a growing Scotsman needs to embrace his inner Braveheart. Yeah, the Scottish garb and accessories just make you want rise up like Mel Gibson’s(before he lost mind) William Wallace and cry«freedom»

Fine specialty retailer for Scottswear and accoutrements. I went in look for kilt accessories in a bit of a pinch, and they fixed me up according to specialty store standards: For accessories, they had a somewhat limited and slightly more expensive than expected selection. But, I got what I needed, and they appeared to have a decent selection of tartans. The help I received was knowledgeable and friendly, not pushy. I would certainly check them out, if I were looking for a kilt rental for an occasion. As noted below, do keep in mind that this is also a tobacco shop, so your garb will carry a little something to remember its provenance by.(This was not really a problem for me as my grandmother on the Scottish side was a longtime smoker, so as far as I know, second hand smoke is just what woolen plaid smells like, but if you’re particularly sensitive, it’s worth knowing. For what it’s worth, it also appears to be a fine tobacco shop.) Check ‘em out if you’re in Old Town or need a detail for an upcoming event.

Really neat store with tons of Scottish memorabilia. Also, a fine selection of European sundries.

I’m not sure what store the other Unilocalers went to but their reviews were written two years ago… so maybe things have gone downhill. I went to the Scottish Merchant this week to see if they have a certain tartan tie-they had about 10 to choose from and all were on the wall behind the register– they weren’t in plastic. This is a problem because the store is also a tobacco shop and lots and lots of people were in there smoking. Soo, if you happen to find the tie you are looking for, it will be sodden with smoke. They had lots of scarves, mostly in the ‘M’s… Most of the stuff looked grimey and they were out of lots and lots of things. Also, like 90% of the shops in OT, it isn’t stroller or wheelchair accessible.

Definately a shop right out of the Scottish Highlands, this combination of tobaconist and Scottish fare provide a good mix. Books and items from Scotland mixed with fine cigars and pipe tobacco aroma. While a smallish shop, it definately reminds one of the like shops on the Royal Mile in Edinboro.

The store’s name is perhaps a nod to the founder of the city of Alexandria, who was — in fact –a Scottish Merchant. This store has all things Scottish. Looking for a kilt for your wedding or Ren Faire? This is totally the place. This spot has more tartan than I have ever scene in one store. Inside, there are more than 200 different patterns and colors of tartan scarves and 400 tartan ties. And if you don’t want to make a high dollar investment in something you may only want to wear once or twice — they rent kilts, too. They also sell clan crests, bagpipes(we have a piper, down!), and Celtic wedding rings. Their selection of Scottish music CD’s is pretty impressive, too.
