This is not my idea of home cooking. Or even home cookin’. Almost everything came out of a package except the omelet and the meat loaf. The meat loaf was dried out; the au gratin potatoes and the home fries were lukewarm to cold. The sugar cream pie was quite tasty, with a generous sprinkle of cinnamon, but there’s a very good chance that was bought(rather than made) as well. It was late in the dinner cycle on a Tuesday evening, and dead quiet(only two other parties came through while we were there), but the service was still very slow considering that the food was only being reheated rather than prepared. Overall, The Toast(for breakfast) or the Lemon Drop(for lunch or dinner) put Rachel’s to shame.

I’ve been going to this place in its many reincarnations since my childhood. I can honestly say that in all that time, I have never had anything but breakfast. My family has always been big on dining out for breakfast, and that hasn’t changed. Recently at the hi way, I’ve had the pancakes and the french toast, and I much prefer the french toast. There is always a diverse crowd when we go there: policemen, older folks after church on Sunday, or couples or families. They are always friendly.
