Excellent service, food, selection, price, and quality ingredients. This is a hidden gem in the shopping complex and our new go to sushi place! Such a clean restaurant with delicious food.

How did I just discover this spot? The nigiri sushi was just as fresh as sushi in Japan. We sat at the sushi bar and tried the nigiri, rolls, and even cooked food(katsu). Dee-lish. The white tuna, salmon, and sea urchin were show stoppers. Perfectly cut and fresh from the ocean. The location is a bit deceiving because it’s in a strip mall in the burbs of Alexandria… almost to Springfield. It is worth the drive.

The whole experience was wonderful. Food was authentic, as I remember it in Japan. Sushi was really as good add it gets. And the Ambience to match. Highly recommend it if you like authentic Japanese.

This is another great spot right next to our house! The sushi is fairly priced and quite tasty. The rolls are on the smaller side, but they’re perfect for the price. The rolls are fresh and they offer the classics. This is a spot you can’t go wrong at. The only reason it doesn’t get the full 5 stars is because they don’t have the more exotic and adventurous rolls.

We came here on a Friday night for dinner and had a pleasant experience. The manager was friendly and greeted us at the door. Wait staff was ok although it was a little hard to flag our waitressfdown due to the busy place. We had the chicken udon soup and ramen soup which basically had the same style broth. Nothing too exciting. The salmon and tuna nigiri was excellent and fresh tasting. Tempura appetizer needed a little kick on the dipping sauce. I would come back again and order take out as well.

A suburban, strip mall hidden gem that I absolutely adore! We’ve become regulars here, as we frequent this location for sushi quite often. The service is always excellent, the fish is always fresh, and the sushi rolls are always made with care. The décor is quaint, clean, and cozy. Prices are also quite reasonable for what you get! We pretty much go crazy with a small boat order of sushi everytime. We stick to the rolls, and over time have tried just about everything and outcome = stuffed bellys and a happy Unilocaler!

So glad that Unilocal took me here, one of the best sushi places I’ve been to. I always get the rainbow roll where ever I go and this place didn’t disappoint. The fish tastes very fresh! My overall favorite was the baked mussels. I just wanted to keep ordering!

For the burbs, Matsui is pretty good. I ordered very conservatively — salmon, yellowtail, white tuna sashimi, seaweed salad, couple spicy rolls, because I know it’s not Taro, Yoshi, Tachibana, Sushi Capitol level. I also wanted to test them out though and not inadvertently underestimate them and tried one of the tempuras which was not good — this is where you can tell they’re not top notch and validated my strategy of ordering safe in the burbs. If you know what to order here, this can be a great meal.

I’ve been eating here for years! It’s hidden from most places, but coming from Ft Belvoir it’s not only convenient, but tastes amazing. The owners are alway hospitable when I order for done in and for take out. When I take out, they always offer free hot tea and/or water. And their sushi always taste fresh! And their atmosphere is nice and cozy.

Go here if you want to impress someone on the first date and convince them you are well-rounded on Japanese food. Take them somewhere on the second date if you want to save some money lol. Went here with coworkers for the first time and was pretty impressed. The service is fast and like most sushi places you can either order la carta for yourself or just order a few big items for the table. Well I ordered both since I am an eating machine and sushi typically DOESNOT equal quantity. Anyways, I had that stuff shown in the first picture of this review. The table had that stuff in the second picture of this review. The best item by far was that stuff on the left side in the aluminum foil in the second picture. It has a spicy kick and it looks like sushi mixed with mac n cheese lol. As you can see I’m very knowledgeable on all things sushi. Not shown is the soup which was good and the bill which was not so good. Check this place out if you are in the area!

Authentic taste! This is a place where you can go and savor every bite. It’s a small place with bar and table seating. Good for family outings and dates(especially if your partner appreciates authentic, Japanese food). I always prefer to get a bar seat and watch the itamaes(sushi chefs) rolling and stuffing. I start by ordering a rice tea(it’s free by the way) and I always get a Philly roll because it’s my favourite roll when it comes to sushi and I highly recommend their salmon nigiri, it’s always fresh and always good. I also tried their Teryaki Salmon platter just to judge how well they make my favourite fish, and guess what? I was not disappointed! Fresh, well done, just perfect! Once you’re done, the itamaes offer you a free dessert with your check(two orange slices and a few candied pecans). The staff is friendly, fast, and this place has my favourite sushi chefs. Actually, it’s my number one sushi place in the DMV area. If you’re craving sushi or an authentic, Japanese taste, then I definitely recommend this place.

Cyndy’s Bottom Line: Great friendly service and delicious sashimi! 3.75 stars for food 4 star service. I loved to stop in for the sashimi lunch here. It comes with miso soup which has tofu and seaweed and a iceberg lettuce salad with a miso style tasty dressing. The sashimi lunch is comprised of salmon, tuna, yellow tail which are generously cut. Served on a bed of grated daikon. The sashimi is always fresh and delicious.

This place is great for reasonably priced sushi/sashimi and delicious appetizers! If I lived here I would come here regularly for a quick bite to get my night started! The owner was super nice and made his way around to every table — hot tea and water were constantly refilled without begging. Only took a minute to get the check but when it came it came with the most delicious candied pecans and orange slices — made us forget about wishing there was some kind of dessert. This is a great family friendly, low-key, low-maintenance, don’t have to dress up, no muss no fuss sushi joint that did not disappoint!

This is the best sushi and maki in Alexandria. It’s always been very well prepared and tasted great. That’s hard to do with sushi so their sushi chefs obviously have experience and select quality products. My son and I are big fans of the Yakisoba noodles, Carol got tempura which came with 5 pieces of shrimp and lots of veggies and my daughter enjoys«Dinner Box A» quite a bit. The tempura was crisp. The peanut ginger salad was well made and tasty. The miso soup was very flavorful as well. Yaksioba noodles were well prepared and unlike other places the meal wasn’t «greasy» it was«fresh» which I really like. The staff are attentive and the owners very pleasant regularly checking in with all customers it seems. They appear to do a decent take out business as well so those lucky enough to live nearby can get it to go. Pros: Sushi and maki are fresh and tasty. Sushi chefs are very nice and professional. Entrees are good and big portions. Drink refills are regular. This is important to me. Servers are attentive. Neutral(These are things that they can’t really fix but good to know): Seating is limited. Nice sized Sushi bar considering the size of the restaurant so that helps. Still, you may have to wait during busy periods. Cons: None.

Living close by and seeing that this restaurant received four stars on Unilocal so I decided to try this place out to fix my sushi craving. It is located in a strip mall on the intersection of Telegraph Rd and Beulah St. My mother and I visited Matsui around 5:30 P.M. on a Wednesday evening. We were greeted immediately and seated at a booth. Before I talk about the food I have to say that their customer service was excellent. I believe the lady who took the order was the owner’s wife. Both the owner and his wife stopped by the table to check up on the quality of the food, refill water, talk about the quality of the fish served at Matsui. Upon eating, I also observed their interactions with other customers and I have to say they deserve a 5 star rating for their service. They were quick and very attentive with all their customers. Now as far as the food goes my mother always orders dinner boxes at these types of Japanese restaurant because she’s not a fan of sushi. She ordered the Chicken dinner box, which comes with the standard salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. We normally dine at Osaka located across from Springfield Town Center so she was comparing the food to them. The salad definitely did not look as fresh, some of the lettuce had brown tips so she was not a fan of that. The tempura was not satisfying since it tasted very bland, it was also soggy. The chicken teriyaki it self was also bland compared to other dinner boxes she has tried. Overall, she was not a huge fan of her food. I ordered from their sushi a la carte menu, yellowtail roll, spicy tuna roll, spicy salmon roll, tai nigiri and hokigai nigiri. Their nigiri comes with 2 pieces. The quality of the fish was just average in my opinion, all of them were edible and comparable to the other sushi restaurants around the area. Pricing, is not too bad I would consider the prices to be a bit on the lower end, cheaper then the sushi restaurants in the surrounding area. A dinner box at Osaka would cost above $ 20, at this place it was $ 12.95. The reason why they get a 3 star is due to their exemplary customer service. If it was just solely for the food I would have given it a two star. The dinner box needs major improvement. If you come just for the sushi, you won’t be awed by any means but the meal will still be decent with great customer service.

The attention to detail. The freshness of the food. Also, the Okinawa beer Orion. If you want fresh sushi, good beer, and good sake come here. Get the sushi boat. You will not be disappointed. The sushi is fresh and well made. The owners are attentive to every table, no wonder so many people return. They are friendly and make you feel like you are coming to their home. End your meal with their fried ice made in house. You won’t be disappointed.

Had dinner with a friend here and overall I had a good time. I do believe the nigiri was rather pricey but the quality in the fish was pretty damn good. If you like unagi, you have to get the unagi here. I did sense a tint of oddness from the white tuna but it wasn’t that big of a deal. Squid nigiri was good too. Shrimp tempura was also on point. For appetizers I had the scallops in butter… and fyi you get 12 mini scallops rather than I think 8? I don’t remember. Either way, the scallops were cooked beautifully and were very tasty. These were also kind of pricey too though. For my main dish I got the katsudon, which I found strange to be encompassed by a scrambled egg omelette? It took away a lot of the crunchiness that’s associated with katsudon but I mean, it was still good. just wish it was without the egg and/or the egg was put to the side. Service was great too, water was constantly refilled and the waiters were attentive. 8.5÷10, would definitely come again. Edit: I’m an idiot for complaining about the egg on the katsudon. This is how they do it in Japan and they remained true to their nature here. Kudos to them. I change my review from an 8.5÷10 to 9⁄10.

I came for lunch when I was in the Lorton area. I have no idea where people work around here, but the whole shopping plaza was packed during lunch hour. The portions/price point is really good. Standard Sushi fare, but with a lot more elaborate lunch options than I am used too. I got the business executive lunch, and felt a good amount of food coma after. I wish I was closer, but i probably won’t make it back this way anytime soon.

Nice, clean and fresh. The udon with shrimp tempura was a bit on the sweet side, but tasted hot and freshly made. I loved that they gave the tempura on the side so that it wouldn’t get ultra soggy in the broth. The rolls(spicy tuna, salmon skin roll, and one special roll that I can’t remember) were good although the special roll was smaller than we thought. The scallop appetizer was interesting but not something we would get again. We felt that the deep fried ice cream would have been better if it was green tea, not vanilla. The flavor was a bit bland and not very exciting. A huge plus was the owner, who was cheerful and very diligent in service. I really enjoyed his enthusiasm for his food and how freshly prepared they were, and I believe him when he says that. It’s really nice seeing owners actually get involved on the floor and getting to know the customers. We did have a problem with the service when the owner was NOT present. It was very hard to get the attention of the other servers who seemed aloof. I didn’t see much activity from them as they mingled in the corner, and only moved when they were needed by a customer. The owner himself deserves 5 stars, the servers get 2. I do look forward to coming back when I get the chance and trying more of the menu. Hopefully I can give them a better rating next time!

Came here on President’s Day with family for lunch. Dad knows the chef/owner of this place so came out to support him. I love the atmosphere and attention to detail in their décor. We tried Orion draft beer(only place I’ve see exported beer from Okinawa). Tastes like Belgium beer but not as heavy. More unique than Sapporo. Sushi was so fresh. I highly recommend coming here. It’s cute and have a family atmosphere. The owner knows almost every party that comes in, it has a personal touch. Love it
