A great way to spend a summer Saturday morning in the 505: Get downtown, early. Start at the growers market at Robinson Park, pick up some fresh fruit, maybe some coffee, a few local arts. Wander down Central, then over to Gold avenue. Sit down for breakfast at Gold Street Caffe. Ponder why there are two F’s in that. Then stroll a few shops down and pop into the Flamenco Institute – yes, it’s small, but they won’t mind. In the front room you’ll probably find the ninos, the little tiny ones, dressed in their fantastic colorful dresses learning to stamp their feet. Head to the back room and you may very well find some of the most talented, hard-working Flamenco dancers this side of Spain. I’m not just throwing that out there. The International Flamenco Festival is held in Albuquerque for a reason: there are some astounding instructors in this desert who have earned the respect of dancers the world over. Their performances are really impressive, the classes are great for all ages, and the Christmas concert is great for families. They also have public performances to showcase their students. This is one of many important aspects of Albuquerque which delivers unique, world-class entertainment from exceptionally talented individuals. Go on, check it out!

The only show I have actually seen at the venue was a Round 1 bout at the 2005 National Poetry Slam. But this place rules. It’s quite small, but the space is beautiful. High ceilings, hardwood floors, wing balcony seating. And there are photos of past and present perfomers all over the walls. I only saw dancers passing through on their way to practice rooms, until finals… we saw performers from this venue at a different venue and they were AMAZING. They received a standing ovation from many, many people in an audience that was not even present primarily for their performance!
