I love going to Grandma’s, sometimes just to look. Great selection of gear and every member of staff I have worked with is very knowledgeable about their department. I have been through the Internet thing and it leaves me cold. At Grandma’s you can play with gear until you find something you like, at it may not have been what you were looking for. I have bought and sold guitars, amps and studio equipment with them. They are very upfront on the trade in terms and you can take it or leave it. Many times I will take the terms because I know they are determined that I leave happy. It is not just the products, it’s the knowledge that makes this music store special. And when you are trying to get the best deal on the Internet, go to Grandma’s before you press the button, their products are priced very competitively, and in some cases better than online. With musical equipment, you really should try before you buy. The staff at Grandma’s will be more than happy to help. Great Work!

I’ve been here a few times for small items like picks and strings, but have also peeked around a little too. I’ve never been greeted when entering the store and the cashiers have never been overly friendly when I paid for my items. They have a nice selection of guitars, but I was disappointed that they didn’t have effects pedals set up for customers to test. There are two soundproof rooms for playing with guitars and amps. One weekend, there was a live band playing in one of the back rooms, which my daughter really enjoyed. I’ll keep shopping here since I live on the westside, but I’ve had better experiences with Guitar Center, which by the way stays open a few hours later.

I will never buy so much as a set of strings from this boys’ club. Every single time I have gone up to the guitar counter, I am the last person to get waited on; every male in the store gets waited on first, even if I have been standing there for ten minutes and they are just kids with rude parents. There is nothing in that store I can’t get elsewhere with far better service. I would rather pay to have strings shipped from an online store than put up with that sort of crappy treatment. It’s not the Mad Men era anymore, boys.

Very good selection of new and used guitars, just don’t expect anyone to acknowledge that you’re there!

I heard Nirvana on the radio the other day. It was a Classic Rock station. Question: what’s a sure-fire sign that you’re getting old? And what becomes of Classic Rock now that we’ve had three solid decades without anything Classic? I’m not sure. Stepping into Grandma’s was like stepping into the 1980’s, and I’m not talking fashion, I’m talking instant nostalgia for an American sound which we all knew-as we pulled up our collars and laced the velcro on our Zips-would never return. Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and the Doors swirled the air while we shopped for a guitar for a teenage girl who draws her inspiration from, for the most part, Taylor Swift. (Rock star trivia nugget, here: Did you know that age 27 is the most infamous age for musicians to die untimely deaths? Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse are just a few who left this world way too early at this age.) With the death of Classic Rock will we lose our amateur everyday rockers, too? Grandma’s employs these people, and for good reason. You know the type: sleeve tattoos, still live at home with the parents, have a secret crush on Ozzy Osbourne, know how to absolutely blow out an amplifier. They’re living right next door and you don’t know it, and they’ve spent their lives learning how to rock, but no college offers Rock 101 so they hide away in their bedrooms burning incense and learning the chords to Stevie Ray Vaughn’s greatest hits. Thank you, Grandma’s, for seeking out these experts. In a matter of seconds they provided better customer service than I’ve experienced in a long time. I can only comment on the guitar selection at this store, because that’s what we were there for. They had an impressive selection of new and used models, and after a good discussion with the sales rep we went used. The store is quite large and the layout is clean. Thus far we’re really happy with the purchase, and it came with some free new strings because our everyday rock star rep said used guitars should always be newly strung. Service was prompt and the purchase came with a quality guarantee. Party time, Wayne. Excellent, Garth.
