Steven Berk is the most amazing music teacher in the world. I recommend him without hesitation to ANYBODY.
I am not a student of his, but he has been teaching my husband for about ten years (before I even knew my husband). My husband has been playing piano since he was a young boy, so Steven did not start teaching him from scratch. Rather, my husband (a busy professional who sits in front of a computer all day) wanted somebody fun, hip and interesting to help keep his skills from «rusting.» Steven and my husband play a whole range of genres from classical (Bach, Beethoven) to Standards («Over the Rainbow» and «Georgia») to the Eagles («Lyin’ Eyes»), Elton John («Your Song») and Billy Joel. I love going to the lessons because I get to sit back and watch them. I even get to sing along.
One of my fondest memories was an evening that I spent with a glass of wine listening to Steven and my husband play and then finishing off the night watching Steven switch to guitar. I even got to sing along to the Eagles.
My husband is so happy after he has lessons with Steven — it’s such a treat for him.
I have decided this year to treat myself and to hire Steven for our Christmas party. I am planning on asking Steven to play modern songs so our guests can sing along. I am really excited about it.
He is the greatest and I highly recommend him. He will even travel to you! We live in Lafayette, even though Steven lives in Alameda.

I’ve been taking piano lessons from Steven for about 5 months. This is my first time taking lessons (real ones) and I feel lucky because I can’t imagine learning from anyone else. He is an excellent teacher. I like that he has a teacher’s voice without being condescending. He also caters the lessons to my needs and abilities so I don’t feel like I am getting cookie cutter instructions. Steven’s knowledge and enthusiasm keeps me going whenever I get frustrated. Thanks Steven!

I took piano/​keyboard lessons from Steven for a couple of years, and he’s surely the best music teacher I’ve had.
He focuses on your goals as a player: if you want to play pop songs, his instruction focuses on that idiom. Jazz, R&B, whatever.
As for his instrument setup and repair work, although I do my own, everyone I’ve referred to him as a result of my own business dealings (I repair instrument amplifiers) has been grateful.
