I love Dr. Lukens! He is an amazing optometrist. I had my first appointment with him on January 20^th, 2016 and he was so kind and easygoing, as well as humorous. He made me feel comfortable, and he made everything easy to understand. I would highly recommend him.

Such professional workers! The staff here is wonderful, they are the most compassionate and caring employees ever, such great customer service! There’s two optometrists here and they are excellent and thorough in their work. They also have a great selection of frames!

Dr. Lukens is the best. Been coming to him for years and even though we moved to the South Bay and work in Palo Alto/​Menlo Park — we still make the trek to see him. It’s totally worth it — especially for something as important as our eyes.

Overall, my experience was wonderful.
I haven’t gone to get an eye exam to update my prescription since 2010. Since I moved from southern California to northern California for college, I was anxious to find a good optometrist. Spotted this gem on Unilocal and I decided to drop by.
The place was clean and very well-​organized. I was greeted very warmly by the staff. I had so many questions to ask since I was a newcomer and unfamiliar with their policies. They didn’t withhold anything and answered every inquiry I had in-​depth. I noticed that they didn’t have a huge selection on frames and if you don’t have insurance, they would charge you a pretty penny. Frames ranged from $ 100−300(?). Contact lenses are the regular market price (it’s the same everywhere). Lacking insurance, both my glasses (~$ 400) and lenses (~$ 240) ended up costing around $ 800 (I have an unusually high prescription:-9.00 prescription with astigmatism). But from the first impression I got from the staff, I decided to give it a go here anyways. I really loved how open they were about their procedures and I really needed a reliable source for my eyewear.
While waiting in the exam room, I noted a degree hanging on the wall (UC alumni) and felt more comfortable, knowing I was in good hands. When I met Alex Lukens, he seemed slightly timid at first, but very kind and thorough. He explained everything without the excessive jargon and answered all my questions without hesitation.
Although my contacts came quickly, it took a month for my glasses to come in. My glasses failed inspection several times. However, the staff made sure that I stayed informed about the process while I was waiting for the glasses.
Even though I wish those glasses came in within the 9 – 10 business days as promised, I can’t imagine finding a better optometrist. He’s everything I ask for –not to mention all the equipment he uses is up to date. NO MORE ANNOYING PUFFS OF AIR IN MY EYES.

I have been thinking about this for days. While I thought that it was an xlnt experience, that really got tarnished when I went in to pick up my lenses. The week before, when I had my eyes checked, the front office peeps were anxious to make a follow up exam. None of the available times worked for me. So not appt was made. I had to call to find out if my lenses had come in yet. The answer was no, but they would and did call me back. Now, back to picking up the lenses. I put them in and asked if they wanted to make an appt for me. They were not eager on this occasion which struck me as inconsistent. They wanted to make an appt for me when in fact I didn’t have the lenses (purpose being to see how I adjusted to a new scrip) and then when I did have them they were extremely blasé and unhelpful.
I like Dr Lukens, wish I could say the same for his staff

The best you can get without going to an ophthalmologist, really. Dr Lukens is smart without being condescending. He will give a more thorough exam than you’ve ever had and he will explain every little thing to you. When was the last time someone took a picture of your eyeball, then showed it to you, then explained everything in great detail? The last time you went to Dr. Lukens, that’s when! And this was for a routine eye exam.
The shop carries a small number of nice frames and there is ample free parking in the lot. I’ve never bought glasses there and he takes my insurance VSP so I can’t tell you how competitive the costs are. What I can tell you is that I’m a sucker for good service and a job well done and Eyewise exceeds my expectations.

Dr. Lukens is really great. And so were the other workers in the office. They weren’t just trying to take my money, they worked with my insurance and made sure I paid the least amount but still received quality lenses and frames. I love my new glasses and I can finally say I found my permanent eye doctor!

Dr Alex was awesome with my 1 year old. Very sweet and patient towards him and very informative with me. Office staff was great and little play table set up for the kids. Highly recommend

Dr. Lukens is the freaking best eye doctor that I have ever been to hands down! He’s a smart dude, he will give you straight forward answers and he’s genuinely nice!

Dr. Lukens was thorough and extremely competent. He didn’t rush the exam and he explained why I may be experiencing some distortion at night and lenses that can help with that. For that he gets 4 stars. Maybe even 4.5.
Staff — Not as impressed. Too young to really have much experience under their belts. Made some comments that were downright inaccurate in terms of a fitting.
Based on that and the small selection of frames, they get an overall 3.

I bring my girls here and they are very helpful and nice. Parking is good and hours are convenient which is what I need. The selection is also nice.

I had a very nice experience here. The eye exam was thorough and my prescription is a good fit for me. The frame selection is small but good quality.

I had been going to another optometrist in North Oakland that I was not happy with nor did they take my eye insurance. Neighbors recommended Dr. Lukens. WOW! I am a DIEHARD RGP contact wearer (and those who are know what I am talking about!) and now to the point in my life where I need distance and close correction. Ugh. Dr. Lukens is so patient and has been working with me to get the contacts just right which involves multiple visits and multiple pairs of lenses.
He has modern equipment, gives thorough exams, explains what he is doing/​looking for/​seeing. And his practice takes my eye insurance (EyeMed)! The staff are friendly and welcoming.

This review is about Eyewise Optometry. I bought glasses there a couple of years ago and have been in numerous times for adjustments, new lenses etc. I am so impressed with the level of service at this little shop. Every encounter I’ve had, both in person and via phone, has been very professional and courteous without exception. The shop itself has a very nice selection of eyeglasses that are in the usual price range, and a good range of trendy and traditional styles. Eyewise has serviced my glasses usually in less time than expected. I like their variety of hours including late hours a couple of days a week, and open on Saturdays. This is what small business owners should strive for.

Searched Unilocal for an optometrist that was open on the weekends and took VSP. I found Dr. Lukens and decided to give him a try. Called on a Saturday to see if there were any same-​day appointments and just my luck, there was one at noon.
Dr. Lukens was nice and knowledgeable while answering every question I had about day and night contacts compared to the ones I’ve been currently using. I came back for a follow up appointment since he put me in an astigmatism lens. I switched back to my original lenses since the astigmatism lenses wasn’t working out for me.
Dr. Luken and his staff were super friendly and his up to date equipment really impressed me. Not only did he have new equipment related to my eyes, he had a text messaging service to remind you of your appointment.

Most of the office staff are friendly. One of the receptionists is okay; not rude, not nice, just okay. But not worth a star off for me…
Came here a couple years ago, tried to switch to a different optometry but had a bad experience. So I came back and wondered why I even tried to switch!
Dr. Lukens is kind, nice and very clear! He is also very patient in explaining details throughout the check up; very thorough!
Glasses selection are nice. Not cheap but not over priced either, so quite reasonable… I wish they had more glasses made locally, or at least not in China. But that’s not their fault, everything is made in China nowadays.
My husband will be going to him now too and I don’t need to think twice anymore to stick with Eyewise Optometry!

I have visited Dr. Lukens’ office twice now. He’s by far the best eye doctor I’ve been seen by in the 20 years I’ve needed glasses/​contacts. He’s genuine, kind, and friendly. He’s also very thorough, explaining everything that he’s doing while he’s doing it, and going over his findings with you in great detail. He’s also very personable. He remembered (or studied — either way it’s a win in my book) I’d just had a baby the last time I’d seen him and asked how my son was doing, and my husband.
He talked with me about LASIK options, giving me honest suggestions and expectations.
The staff were friendly too, if not somewhat timid. The office is very modern and clean, relaxing even.
The building is located near several other businesses, with a large parking lot with free parking.
It’s hard to elaborate on costs, as my insurance covered different parts and I had a discount for being an established patient. But, I think (*think*) the comprehensive exam was $ 95 (only $ 10 after insurance coverage), the determination of refractive state (figuring out my prescription test) was $ 30 (entirely covered by my insurance), the contact lens fit annual evaluation was $ 45 ($ 40 after insurance), and contacts/​glasses vary wildly on price depending what you need.
Overall, I give Dr. Lukens the highest rating possible and would refer him to anyone seeking services he provides.

This was my first time going to Dr. Lukens, and I am glad that I did. Dr Lukens was not there for my appointment, so I met with Dr. Aceves. She was amazing! Dr. Aceves took the time to explain everything to me and answer all my questions. I really felt like she cared about me and my vision, as she spent more time with me than any of my other optometrist ever have.
I was initially put off by the fact that Eyewise does not carry name brands like Ray Bans or Gucci, but the receptionist explained that the Dr. Lukens likes to support independent designers. I love that, and the aviator sunglasses I got (SALT.) were of a better quality than the designer brands.
I give Eyewise Optometry a 10 out of 10, and I will definitely be returning to them in the future.

I feel like I went to mini-​optometry school after getting my eye exam here. Dr. Alex helps you understand everything that he’s doing, but in a way that’s not overwhelming or boring. If you tell him some concerns/​symptoms you’re having he’ll do some tests and explain what he’s testing for, etc.
I also got to see the inside/​back of my eye — pretty kewwwl.

I admit I have to agree with most of the positive comments about Dr. Lukens and Eyewise Optometry. They truly offer excellent service and support! They offer a wide selection of quality frames (and trust me — I am PICKY!!) In fact I went back 3 different times before making my final choice on frames, they were extremely patient, helpful and understanding. In all honesty — the frames they offer are the nicest ones I’ve seen at any optometry shop in the couple decades I’ve been wearing eyeglasses.
Furthermore, Dr. Lukens truly is a great optometrist. Just like the doctor’s office — no one likes to be at the optometrist’s for very long, one of the best things about my visit was that my exam only took about 15 min. The thing that really won me over was that Dr. Lukens could tell I was hesitant about getting my eyes dilated after my exam and he was totally cool about it. He told me I could skip it, and just call and reschedule the dilation for another, more suitable day.
Oh and one last thing… the other reviewers don’t lie — Dr. Lukens really is GREAT at giving advice on frames that look nice. I absolutely LOVE the frames he helped me pick out!
