5 stars for Rain! Nice restaurant with outstanding customer service. The butternut squash soup was amazing, the salad with creamy basil and arugula sauce was great, and the atlantic salmon was well-prepared and delicious. Rain is a fine-dining establishment, but not overwhelmingly or snobbishly so. I liked the placement of the overhead lights and track lights. The wall décor involved what seemed like contemporary/postmodern artwork. The walls themselves were painted a certain color that I wouldn’t have chosen for my walls, but that didn’t stop me from rating this restaurant with 5 stars. I hope to return someday!

Just finished dinner at Rain — we were very disappointed. We started with the stuffed mushrooms and baked fontina — we should’ve stopped there. The apps were very good and I would highly recommend the stuffed mushroom. Mom ordered the filet — which was served with extremely bland whipped potatoes and overly salted grilled asparagus. Also, her steak(ordered medium rare) was very undercooked. My husband ordered the salmon — mediocre at best. I ordered the stuffed chicken breast, which was undercooked. The salmon and chicken were both served with broccolini — undercooked and over salted. Our service was okay, but then ended up very slow after mom mentioned her disappointment with her meal. The thing that bothered me the most was the flies and fruit flies constantly trying to get into our food and drink. Lastly, the atmosphere was not what I was expecting. You definitely could not enjoy a relaxing meal here because of the close tables and loud diners. Overall, I would hesitate to return and would not recommend to friends.

My husband were looking for seafood. We had the calamari as an appetizer. It was great. A nice potion and very fresh. Our dinners were good(he had salmon and I had the shrimp and grits). The service was excellent. We will be back.

A pleasant and tasty meal. Located just down the hill from where Daniel Boone and his companions fought off wolves that attacked their camp and hunting dogs late one night, Rain is located on Abingdon’s historic Main Street. My wife and I had a very comfortable, unhurried and most importantly, delicious and fun evening at Rain. The mushroom appetizers, the best ribeye I have had in some time, all the way to the chocolaty dessert were all just spot on. We’ve found a little gem just a few miles from home. «I’ll be back»…

Just finished a fabulous meal! I had the Pineapple Salmon and my husband had Ahi Tuna. Goat cheese and feta stuffed mushrooms for appetizer. The food was not only delicious, but the presentation was perfect! Our server was Oliver and he took excellent care of us. We will definitely make plans to dine at Rain again,

I discovered Rain simply searching«fine dining in Abington, VA» on the internet. I was in town and planned on watching a play at nearby Barter Theater and was searching for an upper end restaurant close by. Well, this is it. The restaurant is absolutely gorgeous inside and the ambiance is amazing. The wait staff were well dressed, super welcoming, and very professional. The waiter was a young male college student. However, was surprisingly confident and knew the components of the menu well. I ordered a cup of the butternut squash soup as an appetizer while my date ordered the bruschetta. Wow is all I can say. The soup was so creamy with a hint of spice. I loved it. The bruschetta is amazing and the tomato chutney is delicious. I ordered the stuffed chicken breast for my entrée, The chicken was grilled perfectly with the apple fig and grits adding a new dimension to the dish. The dish was a hint of comfort food in a professional atmosphere.
I definitely recommend Rain and cant wait to visit again.

Enjoyed an absolutely awesome meal here during a roadtrip, luckily Unilocal helped me find this hidden gem. Abingdon is a beautiful little town and Melaine the bartender treated us like welcome friends despite our travel attire in this small town! The restaurant is on par with fare at much pricier, much snobbier city restaurants — try the baked mussels for a taste sensation! Loved the baked cheese and butternut squash soup as well. Craft cocktails looked delicious, couldn’t partake this trip but they were beautifully prepared with elegant garnish. Restaurant décor is lovely and clean. Highly recommend!

Rain offers a big city ambiance with small town southern service. One of the finest«fine dining» experiences in the region; Rain was superb in every way. Our friends insist on the butternut squash soup each time they dine there. We had a Tennessee prosciutto(ham based) that was sumptuously southern for openers. Fresh mixed greens topped with a creamy home made dill dressing was the next course. Fresh sea Bass from California was cooked just right kudos Chef! Finally, the chocolate explosion did just that to my satiated taste buds. All this in a matter of just over an hour and a half as the wait staff knew we had reservations for the Barter Theatre. Bravo Rain!

Took my wife on a date here. We normally go to the Tavern or 620 State for special dates, but decided to give Rain a try. We were glad we did. Before going into the food, I’d like to thank the host/mgr Chad and our waiter Erik for excellent service. They were attentive and professional. We started with the buffalo crawfish. They were crispy and the sauce was the perfect balance of spice and flavor. I had the corn chowder and my wife a salad. She raved about the basil dressing. For our entrees, I had the ribeye and my wife the seared tuna. Both were prepared perfectly. The ribeye topped with an enjoyable bleu-cheese sauce that added to the flavor of the nicely seared meat. The red skin potatoes were good, and the spinach chips were crispy and expertly salted. My wife’s tuna was sushi grade, and seared nicely on the outside. It was served on a bed of risotto and garnished with al dente spears of asparagus. Stuffed from dinner, we skipped dessert. We enjoyed a nice bottle of rose throughout the night. It was a great compliment to great night. If you’re in Abingdon, Rain is a must try along with The Tavern.

We’ve been here twice! First let me address this is right downtown and both the exterior and interior are dramatic. Oak interior, huge ceilings, doors… beautiful by my eyes. And it gets better, the food is terrific. Good service, I loved the tables. There were four of us and everything was excellent.

If you are anywhere near Abingdon, you MUST eat at Rain. I am only in the area about once a year, and I’ve always gone to… another restaurant, which is good, but it is not Rain! Last night, I wanted something different, and I stopped at Rain. SO glad I did! The building is lovely. Nice décor. Nice lighting. Nice music. Nice atmosphere. Al fresco dining if you choose. I was there alone on business, so I sat at the bar. Matt took my drink order right away and fixed up a perfect dry martini. He told me about the Catch of the Day — I can’t even remember what kind of fish it was, but it was something I’d never heard of, and he described it as light and flaky, which is what I like, so I decided to try it. It came on top of a risotto cake with asparagus and carrot purée(see photo). SODELICIOUS I practically licked the plate. Matt was great. Excellent service. Excellent bartender and made me feel welcome. Too bad I didn’t have room for dessert :-(

My wife and I went to rain restaurant last night for dinner. We were in town for the weekend for a retreat, and stayed at the Martha Washington Inn. We thought the food was excellent and the service was great. Our server, John, was attentive, considerate and funny. I would have to say the other reviews on Unilocal were fairly accurate. The only complaint that we would have is the noise level-it was loud. That did not stop us from enjoying ourselves, however. We would return if we didn’t have other restaurants to visit the next time we were there, like The Tavern. I would recommend this restaurant.

Our last night in Abingdon and we were running out of restaurants since we had been here for several days so we tried Rain after reading reviews here and at another travel site as well. I do think we saved the best for last and we had not one complaint from start to finish! We did not have reservations and there was plenty of seating and The food was 5 star as well as the service! The weather was not conducive for outdoor dining but if that had been an option, I am sure we would have enjoyed that experience immensely! Rain, you definitely are doing everything just right!!! A little pricey but worth every penny!
