Silly Americans; walking around Tres Cantos, Spain at 8 pm on a Tuesday, thinking there would be any good restaurants open… Didn’t we learn our lesson before? We tried at least 3 top picks on Unilocal before finally deciding to seek the first open place that looked decent. Trastevere was that place. The menu was large, and our greeting upon entry was friendly. We were the first patrons of the night. First things first: Beverages. When most of our small group ordered local beers, this seemed to make our waiter almost giddy(like he had found someone to be on his drinking team). Our beers came in large, frosted, porcelain mugs — Nice touch! Second things second: Food orders. One coworker and I were were feeling like some beef and so split the steak platter(sized for two). Others ordered various pasta or seafood dishes. Third things third: Execution. For my dish, this was a FAIL. The steak came on a sizzling-hot, iron platter, which is just a terrible idea all around. Cooked meat needs to cool down for a good 5 – 10 minutes, but this sizzling configuration forced one of two bad choices: A) waiting 30 minutes for the hot platter to cool down completely before eating, while getting overcooked in the process, or B) cutting the meat and eating it very hot, which releases all it’s juices onto the plate. I tried to split the difference as much as possible; but by the end, my steak was too dry and tough. I was considering a negative review at this points, despite the fact that most of the group enjoyed their meals. But after clearing our plates, the waiter, happier still from our ordering of more beers during the meal, asked if we’d like some digestif shots, on the house. How could we say no?(And these shots were delicious and warming on a chilly night). Apparently we were still on his drinking team.
