Great little place, snuck in just before siesta. Good drinks, good food, everyone was speaking Spanish. A good sign.

Tiny spot with a full wall of wine. The daily special Rioja was delicious and so was the grilled asparagus. Foie gras with blackberry jam and Caramelized onion was tasty too. The owners speak good English. A little pricey but definitely worth the wait for a table.

Thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. Very cozy atmosphere with an impressive wine wall behind the bar. The waiter(owner?) was very friendly and fun. Worked his butt off. The house Rioja for the night was excellent and not crazy expensive. When we tried to order too much food, the waiter suggested ½ plates of the sausage and cheese. Perfect suggestion. The baby squid with asparagus was outstanding. As was the beef(cooked at the table on a hot skillet). Had several other plates. Total bill for 3 people(each having 2 glasses of wine – well, I had 3 glasses) came to 95 euro. We thought it was well worth the money. I’ll definitely go back – if not for the wine and cheese – if I get back to Madrid.

I think this was a wine bar. Pricey, but you’re in the capital, right? We had some kick-ass bottles of Rioja that were totally worth it — connecting with family to do it is just that extra piece. Note: loved loved loved how the management basically got people to move to other tables to accommodate our not-small group. So much for thin-skinnedness!

Lovely location with a wall full of wines! We tried a bottle of Vino Tinto which was reccomended by the waiter and it was just wonderful tasty! For food I choose I type of vegetable tempura which was great to. Prices are relatively high but ok for what you get. I would definitely reccomend this location! Great atmosphere, great staff and broad variety of wines!

The sign out front reads«Taverna Cempranillo.» My girlfriend and I decided to eat dinner here simply based on the restaurant’s appearance from walking by and looking in the door. The staff were very kind to us and even helped me grab a table(I’m pretty sure it’s a first come first serve spot). Anyway, we grabbed an English menu and order mostly from the«Pinchos» section on the menu. We loved everything we ate and the wine by the glass was well-priced and quality. We had been traveling through Europe for month and this was our favorite find. Locals and tourists eating under the same roof, and we literally paid 22 euros for 2 full stomachs, great wine, and a great atmosphere. Just … Go here.

This was one of my Sunday hangouts when I lived just up the road. They serve excellent wines by the glass and the tapas are also excellent. It’s not exactly cheap either.

This place came highly recommended from friends in Madrid. I might have ordered the wrong things. My issues with the place start from the fact that they serve their pinxtos on too much bread. The quail w/salmonrejo was disappointing as I just got nuggets of dried out quail on a big old hunk of bread with salmonrejo on it. The eggs w/asparagus didn’t seem to have anything special– no real seasoning to it. It was just eggs, a few pieces of asparagus, on some bread. A little parmesan cheese would have made the dish. A little salt too. The standout dish was the vegetable ragout with goat cheese on it, and this was superb. I was a little annoyed that I went there 5 months pregnant and although the bar was packed and I was completely showing and there were many tables available, the manager would not let me sit down at one(tables only for people ordering big dishes). To me, if you’ve got 6 free tables, just be nice.

I found this restaurant/tapas place after scouring the internet for the best places to go on Cava Baja(Madrid’s most well-known tapas street). On both of the occasions I went there, the place was packed, the staff was really helpful and patient with my slow Spanish, and the tapas were *delicious.* With my friends, I’ve shared a total of 4 of their tapas — quail breast with salmorejo, Norwegian salmon w/banana, foie gras with apples, and one with eggplant/jamón/some-ingredients-I-forget– and I highly recommend every single one of them. They have an English menu, if you ask for it! They only serve Spanish wine, and they’re happy to recommend a pairing with whatever tapa you choose. The tapas I bought were 3,50 €(except for the one with foie gras, which was 5 €). Fantastic value for the price!

This is a very good tapas bar, but as ricard67 points out, it’s best for its excellent wine selection. The tapas themselves are excellent(although I wasn’t nuts about the jamon and manchego plate they served), but there are only 4 or 5 tables which seem to get filled up by about 10, just an hour or so after the place opens. They also take reservations here, so if you want to be sure you have a table, either reserve one or arrive at 8:30. My experience with the service was that it was also that it was(mostly) super-friendly — and knowledgeable. When I visited with my girlfriend, we tried about 5 different wines(we also had a bottle of the delicious Camins del Priorat) and all were amazing. One of them, the 2003 Alion(Ribera del Duero) was truly astounding. The cost to open it was only 36 or 37EUR, though here in Freiburg, Germany I saw it for 45 or 50EUR in a store. Next time I go to Madrid I will definitely be coming here again. On the night I visited, my girlfriend and I went to about 5 other bars on Cava Baja, and this really was the best one. 4 stars as a tapas place, 5 as a wine bar.

Easily one of my favourite tapas places in Madrid. Very popular(meaning noisy and smoky) with excellent, reliable classic tostas and raciones(my favourite being mollejas, or lamb sweetbreads), and a really good wine list — there are a couple of hundred excellent Spanish wines, at very reasonable prices. It’s great to go with friends, or even alone. The service is super-friendly, although it does get a bit chaotic and forgetful if the place is full. It’s easy to miss this place because there are so many others on Cava Baja, but if you’re serious about wines this is the best place on the whole street. Trust me, I’ve been many times, and every time I take someone, they absolutely love it.

Was macht den Abend dort so wunderbar? Schinken! Käse! Chorizo!
