Maïbar

It’s closed. Now a club called «Chloe», and it’s not open on Sundays. Too bad, we wanted to go salsa dancing on our last night in Madrid Feb 16, 2014.

I saw an advertisement for free salsa classes about a month ago via Facebook and my feet had been itching to dance ever since. So after weeks of putting it off, I finally decided to check out Maibar on my way home from work one Monday.
The class starting at 8:30 p.m., I arrived about ten minutes early and was greeted by a sweet bartender who enticed me to stay — despite the empty and retro wallpapered bar — with a tasty, four-​euro mojito to quench my thirst. Just as I was squeezing the last of my mojito out of its mint leaves, a man who introduced himself as the dance instructor welcomed me to the class. People slowly trickled into the bar and the class started informally (fifteen minutes after the advertised start time) with the instructor showing us the basic steps while some of the regulars practiced more complex steps.
The instructor lingered for a few minutes before swapping our beginner group for the advanced group, which literally danced circles around us. One of the more advanced students came in as a substitute for the instructor and patiently guided our feet for the rest of the night. The group of dancers consisted mostly of young and international women with only a few men peppered into the mix.
I should admit that I was initially intimidated by the idea going to a bar SOLO for alcohol sipping and dancing, but was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. I ended up leaving at 11:30 p.m., after dancing and laughing the night away with other salsa aficionados. From now on, Maibar salsa nights will be inked into my agenda for Mondays to come.
Debo admitir que la decoración del bar no me convence, pero el buen ambiente de la clase (que es gratis) junto con esos mojitos deliciosos y baratos harán que vuelva cada lunes.
