This is a monthly market near Lago station, where people of Madrid bring a shopping trolley to buy their week’s of fresh vegetables! Is it me, or do all the vendors sell the same vegetables? Broccoli and asparagus were everywhere. I love both. I didn’t know what to expect at all, I thought it’s a place of food. But it’s mostly groceries: — lots of fresh vegetables — lots of people — wine!!! lots of wine vendors. And I mean LOTS — one muffin bakery — lots of bread bakeries! — snacking, nuts stuff — olive oil — cheese — jams! As you can see, if you come hungry, there is nothing you can eat. However the one-and-only muffin bakery sells freshly baked sweets and this freshly baked tuna pizza thing!!! I LOVEDIT :) If I lived in Madrid, I would come here. I visited at 11AM and it was quite busy! I originally thought the 1 € was a required entrance fee, but no you just walk in for free.

Dia de Mercado is an excellent local foods market held on the first Saturday of every month. Buy a wine glass for 1 € in the entrance and you are welcome to sample a great variety of Spanish wines along with olive oils, meats, olives, cheeses, chocolates, cakes, muffins, pastries, honey, vegetables, etc. The market is open from 10AM-3PM. It’s worth it to get there early as the market favourites are sure to sell out! After you’ve made your way through the market, take your food finds down to the lake for a nice picnic!

They key is to get here early! It only goes until 3pm but they start packing up a bit early and running out of things. You pay one euro when you walk in and get a clean wine glass that you get to keep! You walk around and can get free samples of wine from the stands or you can buy a bottle and they will uncork it for you. They have random barrels distributed around the area so you can enjoy your purchases of the day with friends. The actual place is a courtyard where vendors are set up all long the edges. You can taste samples of cheese, ham, chorizo, liquors, etc. Mind you its not enough to plan on this being your lunch for the day but free food is great none the less. Its great to start your day and then head to the gorgeous casa de campo park!
