I just had to review this place… as it’s where it all began: my first ever«tapa» back in 2003. This is before every hipster place in america started cutting their portions, throwing goat cheese beets on the plate and calling themselves«tapas restaurants». I can’t say that these are the best tapas in Madrid(or even close to it… i’ve not spent an extensive amount of time tapas hunting in Madrid), but as far as I am concerned, they are the gold standard for what i look for when i get tapas in the USA(which always fall short): quick, cheap, nothing too fancy, very fresh, and… oh yea, on a big piece of bread. This place struck me as genuine and surprisingly good for a place you may think would be tainted from being right on the tourist trap that is the Plaza Mayor. The upstairs is a good way to get away from the crowds, too. Make a stop and buen provecho.

This review is a comparison between Casa Rua and Museo del Jamón. Their fried squid sandwich was slightly better with a little bit more spices. I luckily had one with a newly fried squids so the squids were crispy enough. The price is a little bit more expensive 2.85 per sandwich and the size is bit smaller. But as I said before, quality is a bit at a higher bar.

Famous for their bocadillo de calamares(squid sandwiches), Casa Rua was incredibly packed when my family got here. The line had turned into a massive mob of people trying to get to the bar to order, interspersed with happy people eating and drinking. However, the staff churns sandwiches out and as long as you make eye contact with one of them, you’ll be helped. We didn’t think the sandwiches were anything special, but they are cheap and filling. The calamari was also hot and the right amount of chewiness. I wouldn’t add Casa Rua to my list of places I have to return to, but if I were hungry and walking by, I would certainly help myself to another squid sandwich.

Pretty much every restaurant near Plaza Mayor has bocadillo de calamares which is why I was overwhelmed and about to give up and just check at Mercado San Miguel. Then on my way to the mercado I stumbled upon a big crowd of people eating calamari sandwiches on the street and a long line at Casa Rua. Sold! The calamari was flavorful, tender and piping hot — went perfectly with the crusty bread. I normally like my fried calamari with some kind of sauce, but this didn’t need a thing! I happily stuffed my face and felt properly fueled up to face the hoards of people in the mercado!

We went here twice on our trip. The first time was in the middle of the afternoon on Wednesday, there were no customers and the tv was blaring. The man behind the counter looked truly irritated to see us walk in, and even more irritated that we were planning on ordering food and then handing over our money(I think it was love at first site for me ;P) We ordered two squid sandwiches and decided to take our meal to the sit along the side of the square in Plaza Mayor. The sandwiches were AMAZING and I think I ate mine in 4 bites. So, on Saturday we returned, much different atmosphere, the place was wall to wall with customers, all pushing into each other in order to place their order, this time you definitely couldn’t hear the tv over the buzz of people. After much patience and strategy to push our way to the counter to order we got our sandwiches and ran out. All in all an even more fun experience than the first time, and just as good!

Bocadillo de calamares de toda la vida. El servicio bastante vago. Deja mucho que desear.

Café Rua is a fun(and small) local place right off the Plaza Mayor. Well, I’m not too sure how local, as it’s featured in the Rick Steves Spain 2011 book. It has been around since 1940, and the specialty is their bocadillo de calamares and washed down with a cold beer. Café Rua is a very casual and mostly stand up, although limited seating is available at the bar, at a small table in back, or upstairs. Its also a nice alternative to the pricey patio noshing on the Plaza Mayor(of which we did too). Gayle and I enjoyed our quickly served sandwiches and with our cold cerveces, the bill came out to a reasonable 7.8 Euros(including free post cards). That was also just the added food-fueled energy we needed to go out into a crowded evening with happy folks on the evening before Día de la Hispanidad. And did I mention that it was already way past our bed time?

Note to self: We never tried the fried squid sandwiches here for 2 euros but it looks like the squid sit out in open area for a while after that it has been fried. If you want a cheap eat away from the touristy patio seating area of Plaza Mayor, just come here.
