Me pierden

This place is fantastic. I was near Moncloa and don’t normally go out to eat, so for one of the few times I did go out, I didn’t want to end up in some restaurant eating mediocre tapas. Luckily, Unilocal came through and this place popped up. My wife and I walked in and were surprised by how nice it was inside. We were in a hurry so we at first sat near the bar, but the barman told us we’d be better off at a table and took our drinks into one of the dining rooms. We ordered pulpo(as recommended by previous reviewers), a salad with goat cheese and foie, and a few croquetas. The restaurant could have easily charged us the whole price, but the barman recommended that we get half a portion instead. Even though the place isn’t necessarily cheap, it shows they aren’t out to take advantage of you either. Needless to say, the food was amazing. It is the best pulpo I’ve had and I liked that they served it with mashed potatoes instead of sliced. The croquetas were fresh and were fried once we ordered them instead of being reheated as some places do. What really impressed me was how personable the owner was. We were seated near the door, and he took time to speak with everyone who walked through. You could tell they have a lot of regulars. When he approached our table I felt he was genuinely concerned with our dining experience, which can often have a rather fabricated feel in restaurants in the States. The only problem was that the map location shown on Unilocal is incorrect as the restaurant is actually located further up Gaztambide. Plus, it might be a bit out of the way for people who are staying in the more touristy areas such as Sol. Still, if you’re looking for a good place to eat, then it’s worth the trip.

My wife and I were in Madrid for only one night and wanted to have a nice dinner. Unfortunately our siesta lasted a little bit too long and we weren’t ready to go eat until 10:30PM. We called Alcaravea to get a reservation and they fit us right in at 10:45 on a Tuesday night(kitchen closed at 11PM). We didn’t have too much time to peruse the menu so we simply asked the waiter to bring us his favorite dishes(telling him to steer clear of lamb and goat cheese as the wife doesn’t like these). All we could say was«Wow!»…every dish that came out was amazing(fried asparagus, a veggie plate, tuna, and the toblerone dessert). It was also pretty exciting to not know what else was coming until the food came out to our table. We’ve been in Spain for 10 days and this has been our favorite dining experience so far!

BESTPULPOINTHECITY(and yes, I’ve tried quite a few). This swanky locale has a great ambiance — low lighting, gente maja, and personality to boot. Seating can be a little tricky as the restaurant seems to have its share of loyal customers, so see if you can call beforehand to get a reservation and make your life easier. We didn’t have one when we visited the other night, but the staff did its absolute best to accommodate us. Props to the owner, by the way; he was incredibly personable and made dining there a pleasure. The star of the show, undoubtedly, was the pulpo a la brasa. It was a sizeable portion and just plain melted in your mouth. Pair it with some bread and oil/spices, and we had ourselves a winner. Definitely worth your troubles to try it out when you’re in the area. Actually when you’re in Madrid in general. Pulpo like this is worth the trip!
