The town of Haro is old, historic and old world-ish. For the most part, you won’t find anything contemporary or luxurious around this part of Spain, which was why Las Duelas was such a beautiful surprise. The exterior of the building looks like every other building in the neighborhood — old, but still very charming. However, once you open the doors to the restaurant, its like you’ve been transported into another place. The ambiance is warm, elegant, rich, romantic and almost whimsical. The food was not what we expected. Their prixe fixe menu, which set us back about 18 Euros each, included beautiful jumbo prawns, a lovely salad, and one of the best filet mignons I’ve ever had. They somehow just *knew* to cook it to medium rare, and it was delicious. Our servers were a bit grouchy, but that’s to be expected in Spain I guess. So if you’re in Haro, looking for some great eats, this is your place.

Prix fixe perfection! Las Duelas is a must-do dinner for anyone visiting Haro or the La Rioja region. Set in the stunning Hotel Los Agustinos(check out the pics!), LD shocked us all with its unbelievable stunning surrounds in comparison to its staggeringly affordable offerings. This type of setting just oozes ‘pricey’, but like almost everything else we encountered in Haro, is just as downhome and unpretentious as can be. The € 18.00 Menu of the Day got us a veritable feast. No joke. A full carafe of wine per person, appetizers of fresh, jumbo prawns and savory Rioja-style potatoes along with entrees of beautifully portioned lamb alongside a green salad or a big, beefy filet mignon and frites with desserts of rice pudding, torrija and coffee or tea. A FEAST I say! For essentially $ 23US Dollars and some change. In wine country. In a hotel. No. In a chic, gorgeous, stylish hotel. It was the steal of all steals and left us all rolling, groaning and moaning in complete satiated unison. To be noted: while the surrounds, wine and food exceeded all expectations, service was spotty and, to be honest, a bit gruff at times. The Las Duelas ladies could use a hint or two in pleasant hospitality.
