As I reflect on my voyages to Spain and pen these Unilocal reviews, I am appalled by the amount of ice cream and cake that I happen to eat on these trips. And so it goes: I’m writing a review for another(yes, another) bakery. Most of the bakeries that I went to in Bilbao had pastel de arroz, a very typical pastry of Basque Country, which despite its name, is not made with rice. I, however, was on the lookout for pastel vasco, another very Basque pastry, because I love the flavor of the custard(which is the result of using more eggs than for the filling of a pastel de arroz). After visiting(and eating) at many bakeries in Bilbao, I was delighted to find that Tahona had pastel vasco! For 1.75 euro, this was one of my best breakfast-type meals in Bilbao. The custard had just the right amount of gooey-ness with a sweet, buttery, crumbly crust. The pastry tasted very fresh; Tahona proved to be a great place to purchase a pastry so characteristic of this region of Spain. And for those looking to get a loaf of bread or magdalenas [1], Tahona had a good selection of very fresh-looking baked goods. As is the case with most panaderias, the women working there are a little brusque, but if you’re accustomed to this, it’s not even an issue. [1] Very similar to muffins in the US, except they are more petite, more airy, and not as sweet.
