I love Copenhagen! And Royal Smushi Café is one my favorite places! As you must know, they serve smørrebrød into sushi style sandwiches, or ‘smushi’. This is such a beautiful café. Their website talks about their ‘fairytale’ origins, and like most of lovely Denmark, this place feels like a fairytale, with marble floors, warm lights, a cozy setting, and excellent, polite service. The smushi looks so delicate and pretty. The produce and ingredients are the very finest. As they say in their website: ‘If you take a walk through the gate, into the court yard between Royal Copenhagen and George Jensen, you will become part of our fairytale. You are invited to enter our great hall with chandeliers and to have a seat by the royal tables in the Ant chair designed by Arne Jacobsen. Your lunch will be served on Royal Copenhagen porcelain, and you will be given George Jensen cutlery.’ Such a delight to be part of their fairytale.

I am giving 2 stars for décor as I did not fully experienced or taste their«sumushi». I found this place in a guide book published in Japan. I could tell Japanese people would love this lovely décor café. I got there around 2 pm and it looked chaotic. The waiter saw me coming in but never said hi or anything. Stood there more than 5 mins. Nobody acknowledged me. I couldn’t even ask anybody because they were just passing me by in hi-speed. Finally, I had a chance to ask one lady(not in the uniform so maybe the owner or manager) what to do. She told me to grab a seat and wait. I could clearly picture myself sitting there and not getting any service. I didn’t want to waste my time in Copenhagen so just walked out… And got real sushi from Sushi Lovers!

Do it! Taking the Danish open faced sandwich and combining it with sushi, you get something really delicious. I got a set of three and a dessert after all of which was yummy and found that to be enough food for a nice lunch. I am doing this review based on the smoked salmon, pork, and mackerel ones, but other dishes they had looked super yummy. Staff was very friendly, helpful and elevated the experience. I will for sure be back!

I love this place! I came here with friends that were visiting Copenhagen and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here! The food was great although the smushis were a little bit small! We got all 6 different types and were very pleased with them. I specially loved the lamb one, as well as the smoked herring! My friends picked a few teas from the tea selection and were very satisfied with their choice, while I got a cappuccino which was great! We got a chocolate cake and a 4 layered berry cake and they were fantastic, we loved them so much! The staff were EXTREMELY friendly and nice although they seemed a bit short handed. Many decorative items in the café were on sale and they were adorable! Will definitely come back here again!

If you love places with lazy, ignorant, provocative, and anyone can f… attitude waiters, well then Royal Smushi café is just the place for you. Went here for coffee and cake last Sunday with my mom and sisters, was not a success and I will not return — only because of the waiters we were meet by. Which is a shame because the cake I had was good and the interiour in there is really nice. But from the minute we stepped in was we meet by an angry looking waiter who pointed at a table we could go. After 30 min he came over to take our order. That was of course after I had just 15 min. earlier been up by the counter myself to order and actually talked to him, even there he had an attitude. Our order came with the side of a provocative girl I don’t give a s… attitude, who talked back at my sister, even though she asked me the question and included my name. We had the«pleasure» of her again when we were paying. Other people in the restaurant was very unhappy as well. e. g the couple sitting next to us waiting for the food, which the chef had ringed three times, for one of them to come and take it to serve. FYI none of the waiters were doing anything else, it was not a busy day. The couple waited 15 min. for food that was ready, 3 M. away from their table. Let me end here and say that three stars AREONLY for the décor and the cake I had.

Clearly a tourist trap, but I’d still say it’s worth a visit anyway. I went there to try their«smushi», sushi-sized smørrebrød, and they were actually very delicious, as was the classic«fastelavnsbolle» with raspberry cream filling. The interior is fun and everything is served on Royal Copenhagen porcelain. Mind that the place is very pricey, though — 60kr for a hot chocolate is VERY expensive, even for Copenhagen! It’s not a place I’d go for lunch again on my own, but if you’ve got out of town visitors, this will be a fun experience.

Right in the city center at Strøget — take a glass of champagne with a couple of smushi platters and finish it with their fantastic tea. Beautiful interior — feels like you’re drinking tea within the world of Alice in Wonderland. Only downside was the queue for getting a table, but worth the wait.

So I used to pass by this place everyday but I’ve never had it because I thought it’s an expensive place. Until my friend has been raving about this place, and I went with her for her second time. Surprisingly, the price is affordable, even though they use expensive plates LOL. She had egg Benedict and the chocolate cake for her first time. She mentioned the egg benedict was really good and fulfilling, its like her best egg benedict in life or something. This time, we decided to try their smushi, as it is famous here(?), and the cake again. We ordered the one with Salmon, Reindeer meat and shrimp. I like the shrimp one the best. The other two were pretty good too. The problem is that it is pretty hard to split for with person, and the portion is small. I guess I should try their egg benedict next time. The chocolate cake was okay, its good, but also ordinary. I wish the taste of chocolate can be richer. I think the cake is flour-less? I like this place better because of the atmosphere. I have always appreciated a restaurant’s choice of plates and furniture. The furniture is pretty stylish and they have different types of tables, you might ended up to share a table with other groups, but you would still feel you and your friends have private spaces, as the place is pretty spacious, lots and lots of table and chairs. In summer, people tend to sit outside. Their plates are from Royal Copenhagen. Love it!

Loved the ambiance/interior décor of the place! Before leaving to Copenhagen, I researched for places that were unique to Copenhagen and came across this place. While the term«smushi» is open for debate(it just seemed like an open sandwich to me? lol) this place is really cute and unique. My boyfriend and I each ordered the smushi platter(three different small, according to american standards of course, open sandwiches with seafood or other land protein) and tea. the total came out to around $ 65. As other Unilocalers mentioned below, you might be a little confused when you first go in because there isn’t a designated waiter/waitress to greet you. I for one, was haha. I honestly don’t know what the correct(?) way was but i just approached a waiter in the tea-making area(it’s right in the entrance) and asked to be seated and they guided us after a little bit of a wait. ENJOYYOURSMUSHI!

Really bad service from our side. The place was almost empty and we sat there as two chubby idiots wondering what the heck we were about to do. So I went in to get my chai latte, but nope, she said«go back out, we will take your order there». This was after standing by the counter for 15 minutes behind three dudes the girl was flirting with. I went out again abit confused and said to my bf that he should light up a sigarette cause this will take some time. We took two smokes while they were nowhere to be seen. Crappy service for a lovely place. I give them 1 star for the look. Bleh

The cosy Scandinavian style of this place combines well with the elegant and refined smushi lunch concept. Essentially a mix of the lean and exquisite sushi with the traditional Danish«smørrebrød», i.e. delicate mouhtfuls served on minuscle pieces of dark rye bread. Wonderful. Oh — and do take the second door as you approach this Copenhagen gem, the first IS locked.

«A smushi is a combination of an open sandwich and sushi.» That said these sandwiches are small and will be devoured in 1 – 2 bites. I came here because it was featured in a Dutch magazine and wanted to try the Danish smørrebrød. It is located right off of Stroget and they serve their food on beautiful Royal Copenhagen ceramics. Food: 3⁄5 Turns out that I don’t like Danish rye bread… it is very dense and tastes quite strange to me. However, this is a great place to try it if you’ve never had it before. I ordered a taster of 3 different smushis. Their tea is lovely and delicious. I had the HC Anderson and it was delicate and fragrant and went perfectly with my dessert, blueberry cake with meringue. The dessert was amazingly delicious, the cake was moist and choke full of blueberries. The meringue was perfectly fluffy, melting in my mouth. Service: 3⁄5 The setup is a bit confusing. If you want take-away, you go to the counter and if you want table service, find a seat and wait. Atmosphere: 5⁄5 It is beautifully decorated and is the perfect place to go for tea time. There is a gorgeous chandelier in the middle and random/eclectic things on the walls. Take your time and wander around. Also, those tea cups and plates were divine! This is a chance to use the Royal Copenhagen ceramics without forking over the price. Value: 2⁄5 This place is very expensive. You’re not going to leave here super full, but at least it is an experience. Smushi, cake and tea set me back almost 300 kr for 1 person.

Not quite sure what’s the hype about this place, the interior design is cute and the location is unbeatable since it’s right off of Stroget and next to the Royal Copenhagen store, but the three different smushi’s I had, although very presentable, were pretty unexciting and bland. Clientele were mainly tourists…

The perfect lunch place to take your mother, sister or other female relatives. The décor is unique, pink but hipster, and the food is based on Danish cuisine but with a modern twist. It’s called«smushi», and it’s new versions of the traditional Danish sandwiches. We had the salmon, the chicken salad, and the shrimp, and while all were excellent, the shrimp was best. This is not a place for an inexpensive lunch, but it is a good spot for an enjoyable one. By the way, I saw several Danes eating alone here, someplace I have seen almost no place else in Denmark. Might be a good stop for a solo traveller.

The weather outside in Copenhagen may be frightful(it is, after all, February), but inside the Royal Café you’d never know it. Warm candlelight brightens the big space, even during the day(pretty, though the open flames seem slightly risky to me). Round communal tables with teal coloured chairs dot the room along with big Royal Copenhagen patterned vases filled with fresh flowers. The Royal Café specializes in smushi, which is what you get when you serve classic Danish open faced sandwiches — smørrebrød — in delicate portions that aesthetically evoke sushi. I passed on the smushi(though my dining companion’s plate looked lovely), opting a for big bowl of soup instead. This soup was sublime and came with fresh herbs on top and a sprinkling of dark bread crumbs which added texture. Though my eyes stopped on the bountiful display of cakes when we walked in, I somehow forgot about them until we were leaving(I continue to regret this misstep). If you don’t make it to the Royal Café in Copenhagen, look out for their ever expanding empire in Tokyo and Beijing!

This is hands down my favorite café in København!!! I don’t even like Royal Copenhagen ceramic design but I highly recommend this quaint little café tucked away in the back of the Royal Copenhagen flagship store. The previous reviews complain about the service here but the young lady who waited my table was very accomodating and friendly, and gave me a great recommendation. If it wasn’t for her, I would’ve completely missed out on the most amazing raspberry cheesecake I’ve ever had in my life!!! Words simply cannot express how unbelievably exquisite the flavor was… it was so CLUTCH! It wasn’t heavy nor too sweet, and i liked the soft consistency of the cheese part. Everything is served on the original Royal Copenhagen plates, so at least you’ll get an idea what it’s like to own these pricy ceramics. I also recommend their gourmet open sandwiches, they are the best of its kind that I’ve had so far during my short stay in Copenhagen. If I ever visit Copenhagen again, I will definitely come back here!!!

The four stars are for décor and ambience only! I only had a hot chocolate on a cold day so I can’t review their food or other drinks, but the service sucks! At least on the day I went. Don’t even bother trying to make eye contact to get service. They don’t look at you, and if they do, they don’t acknowledge you. I hope that isn’t the case for everyone, but it was for us. But with that said, it’s a cool funky little place, with a lot of interesting little knick knacks to look at that are for sale. It’s tucked into a small courtyard that could be difficult to find it you didn’t know the area.

What a décor! One of my favorite places in Copenhagen. It is tucked in a small courtyard next to the Royal Copenhagen flagship store on Stroget. Sharing big tables with everybody and simply not being able to take off your eyes from the stuff around, it is really cool. The sandwiches, smooshies and the cakes are very good. Also, the famous Danish dessert(in summer) «Rodgrod med flode»(I don’t have Danish characters on my keyboard) is extremely good. Well, can’t say the same things for service. Typical cold-blooded stereotypes serving you when they want to. You better go and grab the stuff from the counter if you can, otherwise waiting for a latte can take 30 minutes easily. Oh, how I wish that I didn’t have to write these for such a cute café… Approximate $: 300DKK/person(a main course+a drink+a dessert)
