A cool, smaller yoga studio with the NY vibe and setting. Best part of it is, the location, right across the street from the Central off Bugis MRT. 2 studios inside, cleverly named Biggie and the smaller, Smalls. Kinda cool. No amazing views here, rooms are closed off with only the sounds of traffic from outside. Power yoga, zen, yoga core, basic hatha for beginners and monster hot. I grabbed a 10 class package, with it you get your first class for free. Classes are moderately priced for yoga, have found other studios for a better deal. The refreshing part is no hard sales pitch just straight forward packages or drop in class rates. Really enjoyed Saniya’s and Kiki’s power yoga, they are amazing instructors! When you take their class it is obvious they really love teaching yoga! Yoga zen is also a great class to relax and decompress, perfect end to a long day. Now for the negative… I really hate there is only 1 toilet and just 2 showers for the whole place. I deducted 1 star just for the lack of facilities. Secondly, I get annoyed when I have to pay a buck for a towel. I’m too lazy to lug a towel to class, especially a sweaty towel back home. In most studios towels are plentiful and free of charge. What gives? Even with my only 3 Star rating I would go back to do some power yoga with Kiki or Saniya.

I love what the owner is doing here– affordable yoga in Singapore. I feel relaxed here because I don’t feel like someone is trying to rip me off. I feel like they are trying to do what they love, make a livable wage and share yoga. Funky and nice environment, good prices, friendly people. While the teachers don’t have as many hours of experience as they might elsewhere, they also aren’t straight out of a 200 hour teacher training program. There is something to learn from them. I will keep returning.

Since moving to Singapore this is the second studio I’ve tried. I was not that happy with the instructors at Absolute Yoga in River Valley so decided to go here. Pros: polite front desk attendant. good teacher with challenging poses in the Yoga Power class. studio is a bit arty which is cool. online booking available. Cons: loud traffic noise interferes with your ‘zen’. locker room is bare bones/dingy with no lockers and nothing to dry your hands with, mops and cleaning supplies are visible. the yoga mats need upgrading/replacing as you will end up with pieces of the black yoga mat on your skin which is pretty gross.(i will have to buy a yogi toes towel for this studio to cover the mat which shouldn’t be necessary). classes are short at just 60 minutes. Overall: a decent class for a decent price at a decent studio. i will go back as the instruction was better than what I’ve had so far in Singapore. a few improvements with the aesthetics and supplies would be much appreciated and would give the studio a bit more wow factor. 15 minute class extension to allow for deeper relaxation at the end would be great too.

So Yoga Movement is a fairly new place some months old, smack right in a superb location — just opposite Central shopping mall. It’s a smallish outfit with only two studios, the bigger one for well, bigger classes, and the smaller one for hot yoga sessions. Classes are mostly female oriented, save for the odd brave male soul. Similarly, there are only two shower stalls, which makes showering after a power class a bit of a drag. The premise of YM is back to basics, no fuss no muss. No complicated packages, no limited time only schtick. Each class is at $ 20, add on a towel at $ 1, add in a bottle of water at $ 1. That’s it. Come as and when you like, no strings attached. Décor is minimalistic but cosy, though there’s a flight of stairs that leads you up and then down in between the two studios. Weird, but cool weird. Pros: great instructors, and a variety of classes: earliest begins at 7am, latest begins at 8pm. No more OT killing your workout routine excuses. Cons: it’s getting popular! More people streaming in through word of mouth, more people crammed into the classes, more lanky limbs to bang into when pulling off Warrior 1. Silvia is great at getting newbies started, and I love the instructors. Crystal is kind and kind of awesome, given that she’s preggers and conducting classes at the same time. Kiki is hilarious and just wonderful at setting the right energy for the class.
