Ya Kun Kaya is in its 69th year of serving mediocre breakfast… and they’ll outlive Unilocal.A toast sandwich of butter and kaya, clumped, never spread. 2 soft boiled(as the sign says: your choice, wet and runny or runny and wet). And good black tea sweet with susu.

What is the purpose of life? We may never know. But I know what my purpose was for booking a hotel right above this food court. It was for Ya Kun Kaya Toast. You may call me a dork, but I was waiting forever to try this place. The place gets packed around 10 am so get here early, there’s not a lot of seating. Just imagine, you wake up in the morning feeling like a little bit giddy, grab your glasses and out the door, cause you’re about to hit the city, But before you do you remember that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Sure you have many other options, but what’s better than toast that has a slab of butter and ka yun spread all over it? You have several options, you can get traditional toast or french toast. Traditional toast is by far my favorite. It’s a very simple meal, toast with a slab of butter in the middle with ya kun spread all over. I’ve tried the french toast with there is egg in the center, but there wasn’t enough ka yun spread. When you eat your toast you can dip the toast in an egg that is running. I’ve added soy sauce a few times to my egg, but i think i like it more with out the soy sauce. There are breakfast combos and most of it comes under 5.00 and it comes with a drink of your choice of milk tea or coffee. I actually didn’t like the coffee, they might have over roasted it that day, but it was too bitter. The milk tea on the other hand was really good. I’ve honestly had this everyday when i was in Singapore, and i didn’t get tired of it. Now i’m having withdrawals! Luckily i’ve bought jars of the spread home, but i know once i run out, i will have panic attacks.

Have been to the Toast Box and Killiney, and Ya Kun is by far my top choice for a kopitiam experience. It is a wonderful place for breakfast, snack, or afternoon coffee/tea. The way they make their kaya toast is better and tastier. For a true old fashion kopitiam experience, this is the place to go.

The thing about chain food stores is they tend to lose their quality as they expand. Ya Kun Kaya Toast is one such example. The consistency of the Kaya Toast varies from outlet to outlet and depending on how busy the kitchen. The Kaya Toast I had at this particular branch hardly had butter in it and the Kaya was flaky, a truly sad representation of a local favorite. The soft boil eggs used at Ya Kun are fairly large which is plus compared to your local coffee shops that serve tiny eggs. Overall, I would avoid Ya Kun if I can find a coffee shop nearby. You practically pay half as much at a coffee shop!

I tend to pass by Raffles City Shopping Centre quite a bit — so, usually when I’m there, I do tend to hang out for quite a bit. Previously, I used to hang out a lot at the Starbucks over there — but Ya Kun provides cheaper options for coffee and tea. I love their Kaya Toast, and their Barley drink as well. They are also in a very good location. What I Love: Their Kaya Toast Set is perfect… You get coffee/tea, eggs and bread. What more could you ask for? I love local coffee and tea. Especially, when you’re dipping the Kaya Toast bread in the eggs… Yummmmmmyyyy. Their prices are pretty darn good. For $ 4-ish, you get the whole set. It’s half the price of a Starbucks coffee. You’re practically having a meal here. Their French toast is yummy too. What I Don’t Love: Nothing! What’s there not to like? :)
