I was here once for a private screening with my gf and I thought it was a cosy place to hold functions like these. The screening hall is not very big but I think it comfortably seats about 100 odd people. I think the seats could do with a little sprucing up. Weren’t the best seats in terms of comfort. But at the end of the day, I still like the place for being a one of the homegrounds for the local arts scene.

I’ve come here for years, and sat/stood on that parquet flooring countless times after countless gigs. It’s an old favourite, with lots of soul, and thankfully it continues to provide local artists and performers an affordable venue to put up a show. I’ll be coming here for a while yet. Don’t forget to check out Timbre(the bar around the back) for some great local music, and some decently cheap beer and pizza to go along.

Substation is also one of the ‘artsy-fartsy’ places in Singapore. Although not as well received as The Grand Theatre at Marina Bay Sands, or the ‘liu lian’ Esplanade, there are some shows, not to be missed at the Substation. It is also a good platform for aspiring arts students, be it in the field of film, music, design or theatre. Sign up for their EDM and be in touch with their courses and upcoming shows. I use to attend classes at the Substation, and I like how raw and old the place looks, it just brings out the raw art form, something that we should appreciate.

Other than the ever-changing art installations, and the variety of performances, get on their mailing list because the Substation is also host to a range of interesting courses. I once took an intro acting class in a room next to where they were teaching batik, so one gets inspiration from the aroma of hot wax. Very helpful when one is supposed to channel Blanche DuBois, I’m sure. The Substation’s directors and other staff sometimes teach classes too – on art appreciation, art directing and so on. The classes are not very long, so it’s a good place to come and dip a toe.

Built in 1926, this building along Armenian street used to be a power substation. It has since been turned into an independent space designated to the arts, founded by Kuo Pao Kun in 1990. Today, the Substation is a venue for performing and visual arts such as theatre, film and live music. The works that are featured here tend to be fresh and experimental, as the location prides itself on giving both veterans and newcomers an opportunity to present their ideas, no matter how commercially viable the ideas are. Gigs here are usually free, or ticketed at less than $ 20 per person. Sign up for their mailing list to be updated on upcoming shows!
