Really horrible service. Super rude manager telling customers they don’t know any better about the taste of food

After having been to Hachi, which I felt was mediocre, I thought I’d try Sushi Ishii, which is a tiny«restaurant» within The Public Izakaya. We had the sushi omakase, for about $ 110 per person. The Public Izakaya is a mid-priced place, but Sushi Ishii isn’t. we had 11 pieces of sushi for the omakase. Flown directly from Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo, and well-seasoned with wasabe by the chef(just enough, not too much, not too little). We sampled: Tuna Flounder Snapper Amberjack Yellowtail Isaki/Grunt Baby amberjack Scallop Octopus Salmon roe Tuna Aburi. I was bewildered that the chef started with tuna, because I am of the understanding you start with the lightest tasting fish and progress on to heavy dishes. 11 pieces of sushi for 110 $++ is a bit pricey in my opinion. We had two pieces of wagyu beef each, on the house, in the middle of our omakase dinner. We were then served a miso soup made from a very dark miso after the 11 pieces. Would I come back again? Maybe for the cheaper grub in The Public Izakaya, but not the Sushi Ishii section. .

There is NO set menu for sushi! It’s all a surprise from the chef, so you get the great experience of having your own private sushi chef. The fish is really he great quality. The chef only made nigiri sushi, he made absolutely not a single maki. We were very much disappointed… They had the best saki I have ever had I suggest trying out their suggestion.

The Public Izakaya might be my new favorite place to grab a drink. Sapparo beer is only $ 5 a mug and the Tokyo fish and chips are delicious! What exactly makes fish and chips, TOKYO fish and chips? I don’t know… the batter is indeed lighter. The fish is indeed fresher and flown in from Japan. The chef is(indeed) Japanese. Hm… is that it? Tokyo fish and chips then! Lunch sets aren’t bad for $ 12 – 20 though the selection is rather limited, especially when you have plenty of Japanese restaurants nearby and within walking distance. The lunch menu contains fish and chips, stew, maguro don, and oden. Do NOT get the oden – think yong dou fu but not as flavorful and plenty of fishball-tasting figures. Some are square and others are rectangles. Yuck. Fishballs and I don’t get along… they don’t taste like fish and yet they smell semi fishy? Ugh… I’ll pass. I’ll definitely recommend the fish and chips though. Overall, I enjoy the relaxed vibe and the cheap beer. I would definitely recommend this place for a happy hour. And in case you’re curious, the owners are the same ones from Tomo Izakaya over in River Valley.
