Meh… Wanted to check out this new café with my brother. The décor is great and I liked the idea of most of the things on offer. The crispy chanterelles($ 11) would be worth coming back for if they figured out the right sauce to serve with it. The poached egg and hash with pulled pork($ 17) were somehow conceptually right but executed blandly. We suspected the hash of being store bought/frozen(no no) and the flavourless pulled pork of being underwhelming. The accompaniments of blended capsicums, chopped olives and alfalfa sprouts added nothing to the party. However the mouth feel was great, crunchy and soft together. So much potential there… By the way, the staff seemed chaotic and our server was very occupied with her phone to take our order at first. But the food got here quick as we seemed to be the only customers.

Nice addition to the neighborhood. I’ve only had a few items on the menu like the Caesar salad and breakfast set. They’re all pretty decent and good value for money, though none of the food stands out in particular. Quite a nice ambience too!

It’s ok. Not that good, not that bad. We were attracted by the décor initially and always glad that there is a new place to check out in the hood. The place feels rustic, homemade and put together with lots of heart. Finally made it for brunch, and we ordered the Laneway breakfast which has a bit of everything. Yes, it is a bit of everything that includes scrambled eggs, sous vide eggs, bacon, salmon, potatoes, sausage. Didn’t quite like it as nothing was mind-blowing. I would rather have a really really good scrambled egg and nothing else. Also had the truffle fries which came in a good size portion perfect for sharing. Probably should have tried the dashi risotto which the waiter and some Unilocalers recommended.

Perfect café in the east! I really hope this place hangs around for a really, really, really, long time because the food and service here was way beyond what I had expected. Think of truffle fries and you think of P. S. Café, House, Tanjong Beach Club, etc. Rethink that list though, because Laneway’s truffle fries are here to fight and they pack a punch. They came with the pulled pork that we ordered, which was flavorful and so generous. It was the only thing we had on our visit, but it was one of the best things I’ve had in any café in Singapore. Being critical, perhaps the toast could’ve been crispier. Fear not, because the prices here are wallet friendly with hearty and delicious portions! We didn’t have any coffee(thanks to Dutch Colony for ruining our appetite for coffee for the day), but they have a beautiful little La Marzocco espresso machine that I believe can whip up a mean cup of coffee. Kudos to the service staff, who were casual yet very friendly and warm. Even though there was only one other table besides ours, I felt pretty at ease despite them being just meters away from me. It takes a bit of traveling, even for east siders, but certainly worth dropping by!

I had noticed this place on a walk to the local nursery down the road, but it was only on my third try that they were open: they are closed on Monday afternoon-evening and on Wednesday. So far, I’ve only been once, and had a Caesar like salad which was quite good. After, I was still a bit hungry and asked for a small helping of their tasty looking French fries which I got for free(and they were as good as they looked). No alcohol but good juices. And extremely friendly staff and owner. And not to be neglected: relatively cheap.

There is a new Hipster Café in Katong! It’s Laneway Market. Opened three months ago, this café boasts an Eco Chic interior with beautiful and friendly wait staff. Its located on a «Lane way» off of Tanjong Katong Rd(«Laneway» Get it! :D) The Food is excellent and would characterize it as Western food with a twist. The menu is limited relative to other establishments, but the dishes they do have on tap are just divine. You can tell based on the ingredients and concoction of flavours that there was a lot of creativity and preparation involved in putting all the dishes together. Michelle and I started with the Duck Rillette on Toast. A great starter dish, albeit light. My main was the Dashi Risotto, which is «Arborio rice cooked in stock of kombu and dried bonito, bacon, hon shimeji mushrooms, sous vide egg». Please don’t ask me what any of these ingredients are… However, I can say its unlike any risotto, I have ever tasted. Be sure to mix the egg into the risotto in order to bring out the textures and flavors. Besides the Risotto, other popular dishes include the Truffle Fries, Pulled Pork Burger, and Miso Olio. I hear the lattes and breakfast offerings are great as well. Overall, the Laneway Market is a beautiful Hipster café in Katong. I give the restaurant 5-stars because it pushes the bounds of fusion cuisine. In short, it is anything but traditional, so don’t expect going to the Laneway market to find your favorite lunch or breakfast meal. Some dishes are hits and will fit your tastes to a tee, while others not so much. That’s what fusion food. This is a great non-pretentious place to experience fusion food from the view of a wonderful local chef. Can’t wait to try the rest of the menu!

Clean and a decent selection of breakfast menus. However, it may be hard to find due to its off beat location
