Sushi tasted very fishy and not fresh. I don’t think I’ll be coming back here, at least not for the sushi.

Decided to go here for lunch as I really loved my experience at one of the other locations and I’m sad to say this one was not up to par. The lunch menu was lacking inspiration and the sushi was very mediocre.

No one actually stands at this branch of Standing Sushi Bar, but despite the misleading name, the weekday lunch crowd was fierce… not 5 minutes after we sat down, the restaurant was packed and there was a small queue forming outside. The lunch deals are pretty sweet and range from $ 16-$ 20+. For the price, you get a generous portion of fish with miso soup and other little plates. The fish was good and they did something to the rice to make it slightly sweet. I’m not complaining as I found it quite tasty. PARTINGTHOUGHT: the wait staff told us about the Monday happy hour where they run deals on sashimi, sake and beer. It sounds too good to be true, but apparently they have $ 1 sake! I’ll be back to check it out real soon!

Went to Standing Sushi Bar for my first time and had such a great experience. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect of it — it had that air of measured casualness without the pretense of being anything more than it appears to profess to be — a reliable go-to sushi bar. And I like it this way. After all, when I think of the phrase ‘standing sushi bar’, I think of a place where I’d literally walk in, grab some bites and maybe a drink, and then walk out, which may have been perfect, given the very premium locations they boast. Yet I guess Singaporeans will be Singaporeans, and if we’re paying that much for food, I’d best be sitting down to enjoy it. Anyhow, enjoy the sushi I really did. Even though the prices do get pretty steep — $ 18 for a plate of tuna and swordfish sashimi — but I have learnt over the years that when it comes to Japanese food, you’re really getting what you pay for — and there’s no denying the quality of the raw stuff here. In the heart of the CBD, you’re probably also not going to find many cheaper restaurants around, or find such top notch quality. I shared a rainbow roll(very delightful), a california maki(because I’d been craving it — I don’t usually get this because I find this not very Japanese, but I’d come back here again just for this because the avocado they used was very fresh, and the crab meat didn’t taste like the cheap sort at all… you really appreciate how the freshness of the ingredient can contribute to the taste of sushi here!). The chef is also very particular about the thickness of the rice that wraps the sushi, something I hadn’t even considered to be material, but I guess it does actually add up. Very surprisingly happy eating here — it’s a restaurant I know I can trust!
