I eat here fairly regularly — about once a week. It’s a pricey proposition, but my folks like this place. Food quality can be spotty, but even at its worst, it’s still decent. Can’t say if it’s representative of authentic Taiwanese fare, but I reckon it’s not too far off. Service is also a tad spotty, although special mention must be made of Ms Zhou Yan, a Chinese national who gives excellent service. Always cheery, ready to give good recommendations, and always finding ways to make diners’ experience pleasant. The only catch is that she only speaks Mandarin, so English speakers might have trouble communicating. That said, the mall that this restaurant is located in is frequented by expats and tourists, so there are English speaking staff. I’ll take two stars off for price and spotty food quality. But the warm service that we get from Ms Zhou Yan more than makes up for everything else.

Came here for a wedding lunch. The menu was all vegetarian and it was something new for me having the whole wedding banquet without meat, or in this case, alcohol too. I liked the asparagus and the last noodle dish. The others weren’t too memorable but it felt healthy all in all.

Came here for dinner at my wife’s request. She tried the same restaurant chain in Taipei and was craving for their signature Pig Liver dish. Turns out it was no where near her Taipei experience and i swear i will not order that dish ever again(she said the same thing). We had a set menu since they were having a promotion for it — the dishes were above average in my opinion(the pig liver was à la carte item not in the set). Overall the price was okay since it was a promotion. I would probably come back to try their lunch dim sum which looks awesome… if i happen to pass by Liang Court.

I’m sorry to give it just 3 stars, I very much want to give it 4 but the food just didn’t match its price. So bottomline — it’s very pricey! Perhaps it’s because most of what’s on the menu are dishes that can be cheaply found all over Taiwan. So while the execution is decent(though I dare say I make better lu rou fan), I do not fancy paying $ 120 for a simple meal for 3 pax that can be had in Taipei for a tenth of that price. I know I know, we are in Singapore, so that’s why I’m still very grateful that I can get quality tea, comfortable environment and friendly service here. I will come back when I crave Taiwanese food, I’m sure, but maybe not as frequent as I’d like to. By the way, the table appetizer(pickled vegetables) that you get by default when you are seated is way too sweet! I think you can skip it, ask them to take it away right at the start so they won’t charge you for it.

Can someone please tell me where to go for good Taiwanese food in Singapore… because Shin Yeh only has average Taiwanese food. It is a Taiwanese restaurant that serves a few mid-range dishes(so there isn’t a ton of street food, but there is fried chicken and oyster omelets). Service is brisk and quick and our water glasses were always full. The food: We started with bamboo salad and Taiwanese sausage. The bamboo salad was just bamboo and didn’t have any flavor, but was tender and served in a generously large portion. The sausage was disappointing — it was as dry as it looked and lacked the sweetness associated with most Taiwanese sausages. The mustard greens were savory as was the minced pork over rice which had an authentic flavor. The braised tofu was full of tender pieces of tofu. The crab over glutinous rice was a little disappointing — while the crab was fine, it came with a very thin layer of the somewhat dry sticky rice. This was definitely a case where the picture looked MUCH better than the actual dish! We didn’t have dessert but there were a few shaved ice options. It was a good thing we bought a discounted voucher for this restaurant because I would not have paid full price for these dishes. It was ok and will do if you are really craving Taiwanese food… otherwise the quest for good Taiwanese food continues!

If you asked me two years ago, I would have raved on and on about this place. Sure, it is expensive for a porridge place but maaan is the porridge good. It’s sooooo fragrant and so soft and sticky, I’ve never had better. But the recent visit really depressed me. The porridge was obviously replaced with an inferior breed of rice, it was just a little better than normal porridge. Even my favorite meat pie with salted egg yolk has lost its shine! The sauce is still pretty good, but the meat tasted like cheap meat(aka very fatty). The cod fish could use a little more flavoring. The eggplant was pretty good, and the rest of the dishes were pretty good, but definitely not worth the price anymore.

I had some Tung Lok Vouchers that I received after purchasing a household appliance at a recent Philips sales. Which Restaurant should I bring my family out to «expense» the vouchers? Hmm… went through the list of TungLok restaurants and decided to give Shin Yeh a try. I have heard mixed reviews of the place but decided to give it a try. I would say that there is are some hits and some misses at this place. One of the dish that impressed me was their signature dish Steamed Crab with Glutinous Rice. The whole family liked this rich and flavorful dish, leaving some of us were craving for more. The service was decent but could be better. I do love the little touch of giving a complimentary dessert, muah chee.
