Being a huge sushi fan I’ve tried a lot of places for sushi here in Singapore, from take away and Sushi Tei to Akashi and Kinki, and though some things have been decent I haven’t been wow’ed… Until now. I really enjoyed all of their food. We have the giant oysters(a must try!), the sashimi platter, skewers with both fish, veggies and meat and all was perfectly seasoned, tender and delicious. The food came out fast although the waiter did miss a few green tea request, but otherwise I only have good things to say about this place, and still affordable. I will definitely come back — often!

Shin Kushiya specializes in kushiyaki, otherwise known as high temperature yakitori or grilled skewers. The skewers here seem to be flash grilled so you’re able to enjoy highly fatty meat items like bacon or reba. I’ve eaten at Shin Kushiya twice for work lunches and I love ordering the Ladies Set and the skewer combo platters. The Ladies Set comes with sashimi, some meh cucumber sushi(which you can substitute with sashimi), unagi, chawanmushi, salad and other stuff. That sort of rings like a winner takes all bento to me because I don’t eat simple carbohydrates like white rice(if the restaurant started offering brown rice that would be perfect). The skewers are available ala carte and in sets, some of which include mushrooms, pork belly, chicken balls etc. My host ordered a fatty chicken liver(the poor cousin of the duck I guess) and it was pretty tasty, although the portion was so big you’d feel sick if you ate the whole thing. I usually pair my meal with the Yuzu cooler diluted with water. Lastly, the restaurant is decked out to look rather modern Japanese with dark wood paneling and the obligatory pawing cat on the counter. It can get a little noisy so do book a booth if you’re having a lunch meeting.
