Pro: — Sweet potato fries — Meaty enough — Value for money place for brunch Con: — Tiny shop, basically rubbing shoulders with your next table — Pretty much self-service

–Pros: Friendly staff. Cozy atmosphere similar to the other western places in Tiong Bahru.(Won’t be a pro anytime soon if people don’t get more creative). Free wifi. Prices are reasonable but… –Cons:.but, being a regular there, portions are a tad bit small if you don’t take an appetizer or dessert. That’s fairly common in Singapore I find. Food taste is good but fairly average in the end.

I started coming here since they first opened about 3 years ago. I didn’t know what happened in the middle, but I have recently started coming here again. Still the quiet little place nestled in a whole load more cafes places that is now Tiong Bahru. I have always came here because there is wifi and I get to do work here without the pressure of having to give my table up. Food had always been on the average but the wait staff here has always been nice and friendly. Salmon avocado — 3 years ago, I love that here! I ordered it again today and was sad to say that I wasn’t overly impressed. Salmon portion is the same(kudos to you!) after 3 years. But there was a tiny bit avocado on the top when there use to be like at least a quarter of an avocado on it. It is now compensated with a load of fries to accompany the salmon, lettuce, tomato, cheese and bread, but maybe not do brunch/breakfast? Overall, though not what I initially expected, all is good Fish and chips — still good! So my rating of this place comes with a bit of reminiscence of 3 years ago, mixed with what I still feel for it now…

You say PoTaTo I say PoTeaTo. I was actually directed to a nearby competitor today, but they were beyond capacity and I wasn’t interested in waiting so I came to PoTeaTo. I actually enjoyed the atmosphere here. Quiet and cool, with a nice layout I ordered a breakfast item(the Eng-grish Pweese — quirkily named in and of itself) and a long black. Both the food and coffee were satisfactory without being great. I was lucky that I had cash, because otherwise it’s NETS and I don’t have that. I literally had the exact amount by pure luck, down to the 50c coin. Staff are friendly and leave you about your business to enjoy your food/bevs and to fiddle with your phone. Would I come again? I’d come to the area again for sure, but I would almost certainly try one of the other options next time.

Look, they have better than average food in survivable portions(IMO singapore portions are rarely big enough)!! Wish the ambience was better, and the music. But for a quick bite it’s aighty.

The sweet potato fries here are very nice. The music is good and the ambience is good, is very quiet and peaceful as compared to Singapore

Sunday afternoon is definitely quieter than Saturday afternoon. It is a nice cozy place to chill, but not so comfortable that you can stay there for hours, nursing your one pot of tea. I had the eggless chocolate cake once and I was not that into that. The dessert selection is limited and probably not their forte. I would just go there for tea(or coffee) plus their truffle fries or sweet potato fries. The iced mocha I had was not too sweet, probably unsweetened but the chocolate syrup made up for the milky coffee. I liked that. The green tea scone looked very dry and served with just butter, a tad unappetizing.

Let’s be real — the soup, salad, and salmon were all satisfying, and it is cheap. The teriyaki sauce on the salmon was better than usual and didn’t even seem like teriyaki sauce. It seemed a little more like a beef and red wine reduction, or at least like they had red wine and/or beef in it, in addition to the normal teriyaki ingredients. It had those thin slices of dried bacon on top which are usually served on takoyaki. The desserts look a little sketchy though so we still went to ps café petit for them.

This is a decent eatery on the trendy stretch of Yong Siak Road, which is a short walk from my office. As the name suggests, their focus is on tea and potatoes. Like the other reviewers, I’m a bit puzzled at this combination, but I’m willing to roll with it. But at least they are consistent with the theme in that their cocktails are all vodka based! I’ve been here for lunch a few times, and there are some total hits and total misses. Hits include sweet potato fries, which are my absolute favorite, along with their roast beef and cheese sandwich(and I’m not even a roast beef fan. Maybe I was just really hungry… But I will give them the benefit of the doubt.) Misses include their white chocolate cheesecake(I don’t know what it was… Too sweet? Too creamy? Either way, not my style) and the grilled cheese sandwich. Their definition of grilled cheese greatly differs from my definition of grilled cheese: Poteato’s version is comprised of toasted slices of ciabatta bread with melted shredded cheese on top, served as 2 separate slices as opposed to a sandwich. Also, it was served with their«poteato» chips, which were good, but the dip that came with it was also different. It looked like salsa, but it tasted more like marinara sauce. Just… Not what I’m used to. They offer«hi-tea» and alcoholic beverages as well, but I have yet to check it out. However, compared to Open Door Policy and Social Haus, I’m going to assume that Poteato is one of the more moderately priced eateries on this street. Despite some of the weird flavors I’ve experienced here, I still think it’s a nice place for a snack or to hang out with friends. TIP: They only accept cash or NETS.

I really like the down-to-earth vibe of Poteato. Prices here are affordable. I had the bangers & mash, while my partner had a lasagna(can’t remember what exactly it’s called). And we were pretty pleased.

PoTeaTo is snuggled in the new«in» place of Singapore — the sleepy heartlands of Tiong Bahru, where various other eateries and cafes have mushroomed. I couldn’t really understand the name of the place but I suppose it is a homage to potatoes and tea. Their beverages are revolve around various Tea-sers(ha ha) and Premium teas, served by the pot in exquisite clear glass so you can really see how your leaves are soaked and whether they are the right colour. My companion and I had the lunch sets priced at $ 16.80 each, which includes a pot of tea, soup, and main. We had Chamomile & Sencha, Potato & Leek and Cream of Asparagus soups, and Baked Mac&Cheese and the Pulled Chicken Sandwich for the mains. I liked the ambiance because it was relatively peaceful without too many people and the it is then the food is able to shine when you truly enjoy it with the environment. The M&C was a pleasant surprise, coupled with the chips that I assumed were freshly prepared as they were still hot with a spicy seasoning. The teas paired well the food and we were happily well fed by the end of the meal. Kudos to the service staff who were attentive and friendly.

The crowd here is more or less synonymous with what you find at all the other shops that have opened in the now-hip Yong Siak stretch, but I must say that the food here is quite to my liking. The crowds here are less boisterous so you can enjoy dinner in relative peace but when it gets crowded, there might be a short queue. I’ve tried their brunch sets and while they aren’t spectacular, are passable in my opinion in budget is an issue.

Want to enjoy a quiet brunch at the Tiong bahru stretch but the queues at open door policy, drips, Tiong bahru bakery and forty hands are killing you? Head over to Poteato, a newly opened joint just next to 40. It was extremely quiet, guess people haven’t heard of it yet. Potato and tea are their USP but it’s not quite the main thing they do. Sandwiches, western mains are available as well. We picked from 4 of their brunch sets which are priced between 14.8−16.8 and it comes with a hot beverage(brewed coffee or tea) and juice. Food wasn’t too bad and it’s not all potatoes. The baked breakfast was interesting enough. I enjoyed the scrambled on my brekkie platter though the mushrooms were quite oily. Ok alternative to the other cafes if you don’t wish to wait.

I tried to visit with an open mind, but no matter how I tried, I just couldn’t. Everything seems vaguely familiar here, the concept and food both. Maybe I’ve seen it before somewhere … Ah! I know! Everything with Fries! That’s basically what PoTeaTo is. Take away the fries and replace with some other form of the humble spud. You get your usual mains like Fish & Chips or Fisherman’s Pie(value for money), which taste decent, though a little uninspired. Pricewise, it’s affordable. If you’re bored of fries and want to have chips instead, then you probably might want to give this place a go.

Yong Siak street is currently THE place to be, what with its too-cool-for-school coffee joints and quirky arty shops. Here, PoTeaTo stands out as a bit of an anomaly with its eager, unpretentious vibe. Combining twin loves of spuds and tea, this 30-seater restaurant dishes up goodies cooked from scratch and made with love. Food is affordable, and delicious. I came in a group of nine one afternoon. The fish and chips were homely, crisp, and generous in portion. Chips were of the normal and sweet potato variety, and the array of colours was definitely pleasing to the eyes. The fisherman’s pie with it’s ample portion of seafood — squid, prawn and salmon(not your regular frozen Mekong River catfish here!) — topped with mash is ultimate comfort food. Roast chicken was moist, none of that dry and tasteless nonsense that is so commonly available outside. Drinks are tea based, and the iced teas are lovely. Where normal coffees come decorated with a foamy leaf or cocoa dusted smiley face, PoTeaTo dusts its coffee with its spud logo, complete with sprout. It’s very cute, and very heartfelt. Debra, one of the owners, is unfailingly cheerful and is always seen with a smile on her face. My only gripe is that due to being understaffed, the turnover can be rather slow. Three customers left after awhile the day I visited, as they were frustrated by the long wait. All the items are made by hand, no pre-made-to-stand-in-as-filler stuff here. With it’s low price point, I wonder if the place is equipped to survive in the long run. I’d be really disappointed if it didn’t.
