My first few impressions at Omnivore had me wanting to hand out an almighty 5-stars, however, having adopted it into a routine now I think the highest I can go is a sexy 4-stars. Initially… It was the little things Omnivore does that elevated it above its main competitor the Daily Cut for me. The more interesting variety with edamame, chickpeas and smoked duck making an appearance, were more appealing than the DC standard fare. Omnivore being smaller, also meant that it was less busy and has the ability to turn around the meals much quicker as a result. It’s ever so slightly cheaper despite retaining the huge portion sizes DC commands. There is also a better selection of sauces and they provide these to you at payment, which I think is a far better system than the self-serving pump style offered elsewhere. Having experienced Omnivore many times now I’ve seen some of the drawbacks. It can get incredibly busy, and downstairs in Chevron House can get hot. When it’s busy the well-oiled machine doesn’t run so smoothly. Also they can run out of ingredients, and whilst this in itself isn’t a huge problem, their failure to communicate this until AFTER you’ve paid means that you end up desperately scrambling for an alternative to complete your order, as you don’t want to be the one holding everyone else up. Omnivore is still a great choice for lunch for me, and I visit regularly, however there are some chinks in that seemingly impervious armour.

Act 1 — Scene 1 I was super hungry and recalled the joyous and supportive words from the Whore of Omnivore. Don’t mistake this character as someone from Game of Thrones, this one is way more sinister. He has been encouraging me to try this place for a while. Having gone out my way to get to Omnivore I was met with a «cash only» sign. I was pissed. I’ve been using NFC for about six years and plastic for decades longer. I leave and go to The Daily Cut. Act 2 — Scene 1 I return 24 hours later and hit the line. It is 50 strong but the Whore of Omnivore assures me that it moves fast. This part is true. I have cash. Act 2 — Scene 2 As the line shortens and I move to the front I approach the counter that is filled with order forms and pens. Whilst trying to complete my form a number of people who are yet to enter the line jump in to complete their forms. «sorry», one said. Really? I doubt it as you wouldn’t have apologized in advance of being rude. Act 2 — Scene 3 The order is processed and I am now in front of the food counter and looking forward to lunch. «115, who is 115» the assistant behind the counter shouts. I check and I’m 116. But no, stop. There was an error and although my ticket says 116 I am really 115. Confusion is over and the order issues are fixed. About to eat. Act 2 — Scene 4 I approach the seating area and as I go to sit down a girl tosses 2 business cards on the vacant seats. I politely ask if she has ordered and I get the response I was expecting, «no». I calmly point out that the wait in line is 15 – 20 minutes so I will use the seat. She is mad and tells me what I already know. «I have put my card on the table». Should I argue? No. I throw the card at her and update her about the fact that there are no reservations, I have food, she has not ordered and have a nice day. Act 3 — Scene 1 Time to eat. The food and portion size is very similar to The Daily Cut. Price wise though it is cheaper here. The food was A-ok. They have duck and chickpeas which I like and The Daily Cut doesn’t so this was going to be and was a nice change. On the downside, the basement location is simply awful. Crowded, no air conditioning, and people reserving tables. Well, not on my watch. Act 4 — Scene 1 I will revisit when it is off-peak as I liked the duck. But overall I will stay loyal to The Daily Cut.

Some time ago I wrote a pretty long review of Daily Cut. It was more a review of the operations, business model and niche that Daily Cut addressed, than the food itself, because I found it incredible that no one had tackled this niche earlier. Well ok it’s not that incredible given the high cost of running a takeaway shop that depends almost solely on lunchtime turnover. In my review, I mentioned that competitors like Smor and the Korean shop should wise up to this easy profit opportunity, and true enough the former started offering easy to order muscle meals. I also mentioned that DC should improve it’s assembly line efficiency because the queues were ridiculous. Well, I ended up taking a break from DC for awhile because of the lines and a couple of months back, heard from a friend that a DC clone had opened at Chevron House… so off I went to check out Omnivore. Omnivore pretty much what I like about DC with the kinks mostly ironed out. The line moves fast(possibly because Omnivore is still less known than DC), the assembly line is more organized(one person takes your order and money upfront, yells at the protein guy to cook your protein if its a steak, passes it to the legumes and veg lady, who passes it to the protein cutter who passes it to the packaging/sauce lady), food portions are HUGE(WOOOHOOOO!) and the prices are slightly cheaper. I like that Omnivore improved on the taste and tenderness of some items that are similar to DC, specifically the chicken breast and thigh, and their beef and salmon steaks are worth the +$. There are interesting sides like aloe vera as well, and the sauces are simple but tasty. Props to Omnivore for cashing in on the affordable paleo niche and improving the playing field! If I’m not wrong, the owner also runs the Old Tea Hut, which I think is another brilliant idea and I wish I thought of that hahaha.

I am a big fan of this salad bar. HUGE portions of super fresh DIY salad items. Whilst many may be frustrated at the limited selection(compared to other salad bars), I am pleased since it is kept very fresh. Price seems to be pretty steep for a salad, however the quality and portion, coupled with the CBD location more than makes up for it. Service is fast and efficient and you can takeaway or eat at the communal tables adjacent to the stall. Try the smoked duck — really divine. The smokiness is wonderful and the fat just melts in your mouth. You will not be disappointed with this place!
