I never hold any good impression of rainbow cakes but I must confessed Medz’s version is so far the best rainbow cake I have. And what could be a more colorful cake than the thing itself when it is dressed up with chocolate ganache to look like a Christmas log cake. Shaped in a rectangular form, the 1.2kg festive rainbow cake($ 46.90++)distinguishes itself from the mediocre ones with the superbly moist sponge layers constituted of fine-textured particles, a far cry from those dry stale versions with big pockets. Thankfully, they did not take the shortcut of drenching the layers with too much sugar syrup or clogged it with too much distasteful buttercream. Though food coloring can’t be totally absent in the construction process, each layer is highlighted with a different flavour. I could taste orange, blueberry, peppermint, but not the cream cheese, caramel, chocolate chips and almond. But at least the effort is there. No wonder it has been voted the best rainbow cake by 8days. Staying rooted in tradition, there is also the Chocolate Yule Log Cake($ 43.90++), whose chocolate sponge is as moist as the layers in the rainbow cake. This 100% Callebaut dark chocolate would be a decadent, perfect classic treat if the chocolate pearls enrobed in the chocolate cream had not lost the desired crunch. There are plenty of other desserts made in-house by the pastry team; red velvet, strawberry sweetheart, hazelnut feuilettine, waffles, chocolate soufflé and chocolate lava cake but nothing could be better than it’s festive rainbow cake for a jolly merry X’mas!

This is a decent place to stop for dinner if you are in Millenia Walk and don’t want to go anywhere else. The best thing they have going for them is the range of Western food. They have Italian, French, Spanish, etc. The problem with that, of course, is that because of the range, I haven’t had anything there that is better than average. Everything I’ve had is pretty good, but nothing stands out. The pizza is OK, the pasta is decent, the cous cous was a little tasteless, but not bad. My wife had a braised chicken dish that was well-seasoned, so I’d recommend that. They changed the format recently from cafeteria-style to table service. I kind of liked the routine of browsing the prep stations, so I still do that, but now you can stay in your seat and be waited on if you prefer. I was a little disappointed by their beer selection on my last visit. That used to be my favorite thing about the place. They still have a lot of different labels, but they stopped carrying the most interesting ones, like MOA. There are some decent Belgians on the menu though, like Westmalle and Chimay.

Medz at Millenia Walk looks bigger and brighter than the outlet at Orchard Central, making it quite ideal for a big group. There is also outdoor seating for those who like a bit of alfresco dining. The concept is similar to Marche. Get a card when you enter, hand the card over when you order your food, keep your card safe($ 100 charge if you misplace it) and present it at the cashier at the end of the meal to make your payment. It keeps everyone happy as you choose the food you want, minus the hassle of divvying up the bill at the end of meal. There is no service charge, only GST is imposed. Food wise, it is Mediterranean inspired featuring dishes from Spain, Italy, Greece, Morocco… The food is decent, depends on what you ordered. Nothing outstanding, just not so awful you will not finish it. The octopus negra paella(squid ink rice I believe) was pretty good. I was surprised by how much ingredients went into it. Besides the octopus(nicely done, not too chewy but tender enough to bite through easily), there were thick slices of pork belly and mystery meat(it was so ink stained I could not make out if it was chicken or fish slices). The rice was moist and al dente with a bite to it. I liked that. The rainbow cake(I saw that on my first visit last year and only had it this visit) looked so cheerful that I just got to have that. It was not very sweet as there was a thin layer of cream cheese separating each colored bit. The cake was on the dense side but still good. Ice water was available from the drinks section. I asked for a glass of iced water when I ordered my drink. Not sure if it would be charge-able on its own if you do not order any drink. The service was decent. The staff would bring the food over if you did not collect your food after your token buzzed. Plates were removed discreetly once you were done with your food.

very average western food and pricey for what it is. but good place for variety if your group can’t decide what they want and if you want separate bills per person, given their format is cafeteria style where you pick you food and get billed to a card which you check out with later.
