The food is pretty good and fills up quickly, especially during lunch time. It does a very affordable set lunch bento which starts from $ 15++, and there is a daily set lunch bento which also starts from $ 15++. I had the chirashi bento and it came with chawanmushi, miso soup and fruits. The portion is just nice, not too much that you feel stuffed to the gills or too little that you will want to go somewhere else to tank up. The service is good with frequent topping up of tea. They are also very fast to clear the dishes, and it is not a place you will want to linger during lunch when you know there are people waiting for a table or counter seat. It is quite small, and the tables are placed very close to each other so you could also hear the conversations from other diners. Not a place for confidential business talk. You can either go for a la carte or omakase-style dining at Matsuo Sushi. We were given a menu that we barely understood and decided, what the hell, let’s just run with it and see where it goes. At this point, the restaurant was quickly filling up with Japanese businessmen and we thought that it would not be possible to go wrong. The assortment of dishes that arrived included a sashimi platter that was fresh and buttery, tempura(not very impressive) and grilled fish cheek which was fairly good. All in all, there were several standout courses, but for S$ 120 per person, we expected far more. We were certainly not disappointed with the entire dining experience, but came away feeling that value-for-money had not been managed well.
