I don’t even know where to start with this one. Surly staff, not even a smile. Tired interiors — dark even in the daytime, and not in a romantic way. More of a «let’s see how few lights we can turn on to save on electricity» kinda way. Serving plates aren’t much better — my daughter’s set meal bowl was chipped, and liberally coated with what I can only assume to be cooking oil. I’d forgive most of these if the food was stellar. But it isn’t. It is far below mediocre. I don’t know what the other reviewers are banging on about, the food here is truly dismal. I see corner-cutting everywhere — mentaiko sauce does not have mentaiko in it. Fried chicken for kids is liberally laced with salt. Raw spring onions sliced lengthwise — almost razor sharp. No redeeming qualities about this food at all. I’d give zero stars if I could, but I can’t. One star is one too many for this place. Avoid at all costs.

In search of the best udon in Singapore, I stopped by here to try the handmade udon supposedly from the best in Osaka. My partner and I shared the wagyu sukiyaki set $ 32.90. We got a tiny plate of beef strips with lots of fats on the size, and very ordinary soup base plus 2 small bowls of the udon. I would expect bigger bowl of udon considering this is their specialty. Yes, the udon did taste more springy and chewy, better than ready made ones, but still far from my paradise in Tokyo. I suggest you give it a miss

Fans of Japanese food must be familiar to this household brand that helms from Osaka. With over 200 outlets in Japan, Kazokutei is renowned for their handmade udon and healthy cooking methods. I tried the zaru udon, zaru soba and some sushi. The udon is toothsome and springy, possibly close to original version in Japan since flour is directly imported from Japan to make the noodles. But the sushi is quite mediocre.

We were just looking for a place to grab lunch and decided on cruising through Bugis Junction. We selected Kazokutei. The staff seated us quickly. Soon after, we placed our order. My friend ordered the Gomo Kim Udon. She stated it was good but not great. I had the Pork Cutlet + Prawns with Omurice. This was my first time having omurice. For my western friends, this is rice with an egg on top. The rice also has a ketchup sauce added to it. I enjoyed the dish. The fried components had been well prepared. There wasn’t any sense of oiliness. Overall, my impression was similar to my friends. My meal was good but not great. But, I think, for the most part, this is my expectation from the restaurants in Bugis Junction. The food was well presented though. The service was spotty. While our order was quickly taken and the food came soon after, for periods of time, our server disappeared. It was difficult to get refills of water. There was certainly no checking to see if we had any issues with our meals. The ambiance is clean and functional with sllight notes to accentuate that it is a Japanese restaurant. If I was in need of a quick meal, I would consider going here again. It is certainly not a destination restaurant though.

Kazokutei serves conventional Japanese fare — ramen, soba, donburi — at budget-friendly prices(meaning under $ 15 for set meals). We decided to give this a try as we were rather bored with usual choices like Sushi Tei and Sakae Sushi. The dining space is roomy and you don’t have to jostle for elbow room with adjacent tables — in fact, we were given a nice, two-seater sofa during our dinner there. My company tried the ramen and wasn’t too impressed with the saltiness of the broth. In addition, the texture of the noodles was not springy enough. I had a meal with buckwheat soba, but found the soba a little too plain for my tastes. The soba also didn’t taste very fresh, and had no aroma exuding from it. Dipped into the bowl of sauce, the flavours of the soba never emerged. While the quantity was great, I wasn’t satisfied with the ingredients that the restaurant had chosen to use. If you have a big appetite, you might find the food here worth your money — but don’t expect to be wowed. High-grade, authentic Japanese fare this is not.
