I am a huge bookworm even until now, but I used to visit libraries a lot more often since I was too young with too little pocket money to buy the bookshelf full of my favorite books that I have now. Living in Clementi meant that the largest library closest to me was the Jurong East Regional Library; it was my favourite place to visit, and even more so after it’s huge revamp a few years ago. I loved their concept of dedicating the top floor to youths only, and it provided my 16 year old self and friends a great place to sit and talk after school, while flipping through comic books and magazines and even doing some homework together. The atmosphere on this floor was vastly different from other levels, with a more relaxed rule of the old ‘silence in the library’. But growing older into my tertiary study years, the JE library still provided me with a great studying spot on its other levels, where my classmates and I would gather for hardcore memorizing action in its cool and quiet corridors. There is a café on the first floor if you’re feeling hungry after one too many hours of studying, and a Basement level for young kids! This meant the noise and screaming was kept separate from the rest of the levels by a good chunk of the library taken up by the café and video section — great planning and design on their part!

One of the biggest Libraries in Singapore, the Jurong East Regional Library offers a cozy and private abode for anyone who seeks a peaceful place to study or just read. The first time I went to this library was when I was studying mandarin nearby. It was truly a peaceful and cozy place for me to review my lessons. It felt like I was losing track of time because the place was conducive for me to concentrate. It has something to do with the people around as well. They use the library to actually read and study-not a dating place or whatnot. This place welcomes anyone who seeks a quiet place to read, study, or just think.
