I visited this goat farm as part of a mandatory school excursion when I was younger, and remembered nothing but bad smells. I recently re-visited again out of curiosity and for lack of a better activity for the mundane weekend, as part of a group of friends’ mini adventure trip. Yeap — bad smell still there. But that aside, it felt both nostalgic and slightly hollow to be walking around this goat farm that is filled with goats and sheep but with only a few staff working on the premise. It seems like Singapore is struggling to be self-sustaining even after all these years. This farm is one of the largest goat milk suppliers to our local super markets, which is quite a feat. But it is the only goat farm in Singapore, so it’s no surprise that they focus quite a bit of efforts on school trips and exposure activities. We were able to take a free tour of the area, and there were large schedules pinned up stating schools which were visiting for the week with their own special milking activities and talks. We were also able to purchase fresh goat milk from their mini-mart, which we gamely did and tried for taste. Original flavor was a tad too ‘original’ with a strong goat-y taste, but chocolate and strawberry were fine and somehow tasted even creamier!

Another farm that I went just for the purpose of tasting goat’s milk. Before going to the Hay Dairies farm, I have never had goat’s milk before. From research, I found out that goat’s milk are better than cow’s milk in some way. Some of the many benefits are goat’s milk is lower in fat, not allergies like cow’s milk and have natural anti inflammatory. We reached there around 2pm and found that the feeding session was over. If you are interested in the feeding session, be prepared to reach the farm between 9am to 11am to understand how the whole process of milking and feeding is done. Although we could not view the process, we were still lucky that the farm still allows public to tour the farm to have a look at the goats. The first thing you will experience is the unbearable smell. I realized I can’t work in a farm although that is one of my dream. At the end of the tour, we bought ourselves a bottle of the goat’s milk. The milk taste is more strong than cow’s milk but still bearable. Both me and my boyfriend feel a 200ml goat’s milk for $ 2 is a little costly but after knowing the health benefits that it brings, we still bought home a set of 5 bottles of 200ml milk that cost $ 10. The staff will help you to pack them in a styrofoam box and filled them with ice. Surprisingly, when I reached home at 9pm, the ice have not melt completely. If you are thinking of ordering from Hay Dairies, they also have home delivery done once a week with a minimum order of 2×800ml bottle of milk. The farm will be close at 4pm.
