This place is hard to find, unless you know this area well. I got lost looking for Upper Wilkie Road and Google Map did not indicate a part of MacKenzie Road was closed to traffic. So you can only get there driving in from Sophia Road and not from Little India side. There is limited parking and the road is narrow inside the compound, be careful when turning to get out. The place looks secure as you need your keycard to access the room area even though you do not need the keycard use the elevator. There is a comfortable looking lounge area on level 2 where guests can watch TV, read, relax. I find it strange that there are 3 sun loungers on the rooftop when there is no proper pool though there is a small wading(probably ankle deep though) pool. The rooftop does have a good view of Mount Emily Park and gives a secluded feel and a sense of being away from a busy city. There are no bunk beds in the dorm rooms and they are a decent size with windows. There is also a smaller single room with no window but has an ensuite which is not advertised online. You need to ask for it at the desk. It costs more than a dorm bed but less than the twin room. The place is cheery and clean, but it is really hard to get to and can be a challenge if you have heavy or bulky luggage due to its location perched atop a small hill. It is also dark at night with limited lighting.

Hangout at Mt. Emily is a budget-hotel, but I use that term loosely as I think it conjures up visions of a Motel 6 or La Quinta. Let it be know that this is a Budget Hotel with a heartbeat that pulses strongly in its staff. Hangout’s staff were incredibly. So helpful, kind /pleasant, and even gave us Christmas presents on Christmas day– Holy Moly! Singapore can be expensive especially when it comes to accommodations(and near the Christmas season). Hangout is affordable but is definitely twice as expensive as a more traditional budget hotel in the USA. This was in no way a hostel. Plenty of families(large families with aunts and cousins) were staying here amidst a few backpackers. Breakfast was more than expected(eggs, toast, beans, rice-dish) but the coffee machine was traditionally on the fritz(but upstairs and downstairs machine). It was good when it was working. Breakfast is a hustle, get there early. The only complaints I would say is the lack of overhead lighting in our room, it made the room feel a bit dark in the evenings. Reading in bed(including with the side lamp) was a bit of a challenge. And, the A/C was just okay. It performed cooling well, but I have to wonder if it is evaporate A/C as everything continually felt damp. Or, this could just life in Singapore. Hangout at Mt. Emily is at an incredibly location, one that I would highly recommend. Well within walking distance of China Town, Little India, MRT(train station), and Orchard Rd. Hangout is on a hill which makes the walk a bit more of a challenge when overeating paratha! Taxi’s arrive usually within 5 minutes should you need one to take you to the airport or zoo.

Hangout at Mt. Emily is a budget hotel with affordable rooms and basic amenities such as wireless Internet, en-suite bathrooms and breakfast included in the room rate. It’s a good option for travelers who are keen to stay near Orchard Road while keeping an eye on their wallet. There are a variety of room types available including shared dorms and twin, double, triple or quad rooms as well. The hotel has a youthful vibe. The lounge on the second floor offers movie screenings, a pool table and a pantry, while the roof terrace is a great place to view the lights of Orchard Road. There is also a self-service laundry room for guests of the hotel.

I cannot recommend this place enough. At first sight, it is a little bit more expensive than some other hostels. BUT you will not regret investing these 5 singapore dollars a night. First of all, check what is included in the rate(24 hour aircon, towels, breakfast,…). Then there are no bunk beds here, rooms only take 7 people(compared to 24 elsewhere) and each room has an ensuite. There isalso 24 hour reception. Excellent! The only minus is that although it’s very close to Little India India MRT and the hop-on hop-off bus station there, iit is a good idea to use the little map provided with your key card to find it(always leave MRT via McKenzie road exit). And there are a few steps to be mastered going throught the park so if you have very heavy luggage, it may be worthwhile to take a cab. Also I found that sometimes their website says they are full but if you call there still are bed available.

This is an amazing budget hotel, located near the centre. It is very modern & trendy and very cheap! :o) The basic essentials are provided: air con & en-suite bathrooms, in a clean & cosy environment. It is located in a quiet suburb, near a park, for chill-out moments. There is also, a 54 plasma TV and free internet access. You may also, relax in the roof top garden. There is plenty of opportunity to mix with fellow travellers, or chill in your own time and space. Breakfast is also, included, which makes the price even more good value for money. …I would definately stay here again & recommend it to others needing a place to stay in Singapore.
