This is where it all began for me. When I was in the US, I liked bubble tea as much as the next person, but I never went out of my way to get it, nor did I ever have cravings for it. Now that I live in Asia, I have accepted all things Asian in my life*, and going to Gong Cha every other day is one of them. Once I started working, I would get group Whatsapp messages asking if I wanted Gong Cha. I would wonder, «Why does everyone enthusiastically respond to this question? Why the hell do they keep saying 30% or 80%? When will Josh T. stop sending me these boring cat videos?”** Eventually, peer pressure got the best of me. I checked the menu online, and responded«Earl grey milk tea with pearl jelly please… 30% sugar level.» Within the hour, my colleague comes in and delivers this fabled Gong Cha. I manage to overenthusiastically punch the straw into my drink, only to have it go through the cup, causing the earl grey milk tea to overflow profusely as it spills all over my desk, on my outfit, and all over the floor. After that incident, I didn’t order Gong Cha for a few weeks. I then checked myself into Gong Cha rehab, where I learned the basics of Gong Cha consumption. Ohhhh you’re supposed to cover the top of the straw with your thumb, THEN punch it through the airtight seal. After that, I was healed, and the rest is history. Hope your Gong Cha experiences will be yummy and just as colorful as mine! – *This doesn’t include posing with the peace sign in pics. But it might include buying a selfie stick soon. **Said no one ever. Keep ‘em coming.
