Located in Upper Bukit Timah Road, this place is definitely a local favorite. I have been here for dinner twice and both times it was packed. Their curry fish head is a signature(pretty much every table orders one) but I have yet to try for myself. Instead, I tried their other signature dish, the salt baked crab. The crab was not that cheap, a small crab for the 2 of us is priced at 55. The crab is pretty good though, fresh, with plenty of meat in its claws, the roe was pretty good too and this method of salt baking does bring out the freshness and sweetness of the crab as there is no overwhelming seasoning. We also had the har cheung chicken wings which was delicious but not outstanding. The main problem for this place is the wait. There are plenty of seats so you usually don’t need to wait for a table, but once you ordered you will have to wait at least 45 mins for your food to arrive. And it does not arrive all at once. Both times we ordered three dishes and each dish would arrive separately one after the other with a 10 min interval in between so we ended up finishing one dish before the next dish arrived. Perhaps they have some staffing and logistics issues but that is definitely a big area for improvement.

Famous for the fish head curry but I find it a little too spicy and a little too overrated. The estimated wait is 30 minutes but today, it took almost an hour for the food to arrive.

This place serves my favourite fish head curry in Singapore. I’ve been eating it for years and although the pricing has stayed pretty much the same but the size of the fish head has been shrinking over the years. It’s still very reasonably priced and being located at Hup Choon eating house, you feel like you’re either in malaysia or in Singapore around the 80’s. This place might be hard to find by cab but some of the drivers know it as the Hokkien Kong Hui(which is upstairs). The ambience is busy, busy but the food is good. Order the lime juice or the lemon tea, it goes really nicely to the food and it helps you enjoy the local food experience. You could go with beer and feel really ‘uncle’ about it too! I’d avoid this place on the eve of weekends and public holidays, the waits can be grueling and the parking will be a hassle. Don’t park illegally outside, summon warriors are always patrolling the area. Park either in the premises or at the paid parking area behind the eatery, it’s the small lane down the road after you pass the entrance of the premises. An alternative to waiting to be served on those crowded days would be to order and simple drive to pick up the food. Must try dishes– fish head curry, seafood hor fun, coffee pork ribs and four Treasure bean curd.
