This is a review of a solo lunch at Fu Zhu stall at Fu San Man Food Summons. This was the first of two failed food walkabouts for the day. I had read about a stall at this coffee shop/hawker centre that served steaks. I thought that was a pretty neat concept. So, I decided to go check it out. When I arrived, this stall(Steak Republic) was closed and there was a stall for lease sign. Their site is still up. According to the hours posted on their site, they should have been open. So, I am not sure what the deal is. But hey, it’s a hawker centre with about ten or so stalls. On this Sunday, some of the other stalls were also closed. I wandered around and picked Fu Zhu. It is a stall that provides basic Chinese dishes. The stall and general area were relatively clean and well maintained. The food court was less than half full. There weren’t really any queues at any of the stalls. This was mid-afternoon on a Sunday. The stall attendant was friendly enough. He took my order and quickly started to prepare my food. While he was doing this, I went over to the beverage stall and ordered a lime juice. About ten minutes after I ordered, my food was ready. Ginger-Onion Chicken Set — It was a very generous portion. The chicken was tender. There was a little too much salt for my taste but I still enjoyed it. I added some peppers to give it some kick and cut through the saltiness. The greens were well prepared but maybe just a touch on the bitter side. I did not enjoy the soup. I think it was from a fish stock and it clashed with the flavour of the chicken. The lime juice from the nearby stall was a straight-up basic rendition of the hawker style lime juice. It was refreshing but nothing special. Collage of meal: Cost: Ginger-Onion Chicken Set($ 5.80) + Lime Juice($ 1.40) = Total($ 7.20) Overall — This was a basic hawker stall experience. It took care of my hunger. The cost was slightly higher than some similar hawker stalls but the portion was also larger. It was a lot of food. I thought it was a good value. This is one of those places that if you live very nearby, you might pop in every once in awhile. But there is certainly no reason to go out of one’s way to try it. This is a two and a half star experience that I have rounded up to three stars.
