It was my first visit here on Sunday late afternoon(25 Oct 15). Ordered the Five & Dime Hot Chocolate but don’t find it hot enough. The atmosphere is nice to chill out. But perhaps because I am becoming like an uncle, prefer my drinks hot instead. Will try the dinner menu some other time, but it’s definitely a good location to chill out along River Valley.

Came for brunch on a Sunday around noon but was a 40 minute wait so came back for a late lunch and got seated right away. They serve their brunch menu til 4:20pm so that alone is worth 4 stars! Not sure why 4:20… I had the pasta with roe and it was pretty tasty. The portion wasn’t huge. She had the beef hash with scrambled eggs which I thought was great. The beef reminded me of the kind of beef you’d get on a cheesesteak, which have a special place in my heart. They have a separate dinner menu which looks interesting, and even a supper menu served for 10:30 to 11:30pm which really just looked like bar bites. I definitely be back to try the dinner menu and sample their cocktails. Only Heineken on draft. The servers are great — very nice and attentive.

Tried their brunch. This is a 3.5 star place. The food is tasty. The venue is small, better get a reservation unless you like bar seating(not too bad, the drink lady is cute). The espresso nice. I wasn’t wowed but everything is above average so a nice experience. Suggestion. Put some hooks for bags at the bar seating.

This place has been on my radar for my whole stay in Singapore and I finally checked it out. I intentionally waited to come on a day when I would want a late lunch, since I had heard it was usually busy. I came in around a 3PM on a weekday and it was pretty empty but I can see why this place gets full– there are only a handful of tables. The menu is short and sweet with a nice variety for a range of tastes and preferences. I went with the porkbelly sandwich and sweet potato fries with a glass of pear juice. The food came out very quickly– probably within 10 minutes. The sandwich was actually two small slider-type sandwiches. They were on these cute little toasted buns that had a sweetish flavor. The pork belly was incredibly tender and the sweet bread definitely complimented the savory and rich meat. The only issue is that the sandwiches were very difficult to eat. Trying to eat the sandwich with my hands left my hands(and shirt) covered in pork grease. I tried using a knife and fork but even then, the sandwich fell apart. The sweet potato fries were perfectly crispy and flavorful. Overall, it was a satisfying(and pretty rich-tasting) lunch. The servers were very friendly and attentive. I can see why this place is so popular.

Came here for July’s YUBE brunch. After being in Aussie(OZ) for 4 months, I’ve been craving for brunch menus. And the first item that popped out from the menu was Eggs Benny. It has poached eggs on top of a brioche with sliced wagyu(beef), small bowl of mesclun greens(salads), fruit salads(grapes, sliced strawberries and sliced bananas) — extremely small portions, and flavored roasted breakfast potatoes. The poached eggs have no flavors on it(not even lightly salted/peppered). The potatoes had a hint of spice in it and were pretty good. The food was a little pricy for not a big portion either. Was not a wow factor for me. The Chocolate Lava Cake with Salted Egg Yolk Custard however wasn’t too disappointing. It was pretty good in terms of taste — a combination of sweet and salty and a hint of bitterness from the chocolate. The price however was steep. I wouldn’t order it unless I share the cost with a few others. The cranberry sunrise tea wasn’t a wow factor either. If you would like it to be cold, they will serve you a glass with ice on the side. Wasn’t too fruity either. Overall, I think what I like about this café is that it has bigger space to accommodate more people in the store(good for big groups but reserve seatings in advance) and the interesting spins for the dessert sections.

Five and Dime Eatery is a stone’s throw away from home and I’m addicted to their beef hash. They’re very accommodating with the Paleo diet and are always willing to make substitutions for bread. The service is very friendly and attentive. I’ve never had a bad experience here. This place would be a 5-star for me if they had more Paleo-friendly options on their menu, but definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for some awesome comfort food in a very hip ambience.

Food is here is down to earth and simple, but if you’re coming here you should probably call and make reservations. Been here for brunch and dinner, and quite satisfied with both meals. I wouldn’t call this place affordable, but I like the food enough to come back. The menu is a mix of everything, more along the lines of comfort food. I like the mentaiko pasta, and the cajun chicken. This place has something to suit everyone — came here for dinner in a big group. Service was prompt, but the food took a while. Cuisine here isn’t world class so don’t come here expecting the world when it isn’t crazy expensive. Come here for a nice, cosy, busy atmosphere, with friends, for great coffee(so I’m told), and decent comfort food. I cannot say this enough — make reservations!

We’ve come here three or four times when we want to treat ourselves to something a little special, but not fine dining. Great little café /bistro-style place if you’re looking for a nice«date» place or Sunday brunch. Brunch is terrific, includes a solid array of choices typical Western brunch choices(pancakes, Belgian waffles, French toast…) and of hearty portions. Dinner includes non-boring, tasty options that combine a little of Singapore and little international flair. The desserts are particularly yummy!

Iiiiiiiit’s all right. The menu is simple and easy to navigate, but I’m not sure if the food they serve is meant to be fall under a single coherent style or cuisine — there’s eggs benny and corned beef hash, and then there’s also a mentaiko pasta, and katsu curry rice. Was it meant to be an ‘international’ menu? I’m just being curious. Just for kicks, we got the corned beef and the mentaiko pasta, which we were told was made with the signature mentaiko sauce. Food’s on the table, and I’m eating the corned beef, that feels like it came out of a can, onto the skillet, and onto my plate. Not incredibly exciting. The mentaiko pasta was… Mentaiko and pasta. Ummm I guess I should have managed my expectations? Free parking and a fine frontage and ambience, it has… But I’ll probably hold out on coming back, until its got a new menu maybe?

This place is really a disappointment. When it opened months ago in our neighborhood we were really excited and promptly went to check it out. The décor is very nice and clean and the building is small and inviting. On the first visit the food was terrible, and we unfortunately swore the place off. We had seen a lot of other bad press about the place in the weeks afterwards, and then at some point we even heard they accepted the feedback and changed the menu. So months later, we made a return visit last night to try this new menu. Much to our surprise(although maybe it shouldn’t have been a surprise), the menu was exactly the same. Rather than bailing to try another restaurant, we just decided we would try some other menu items instead, knowing that what we ordered the first time wasn’t worthy of a repeat order. Unfortunately, they did nothing to change our impression of the food and our friends that we brought their(also neighborhood residents) were equally unimpressed. Some notes on different menu options: Hamburger: the burger which had that all too familiar texture of most hamburgers here in Singapore. Mealy, as if there are breadcrumbs or some other additives added to the meat to skimp on costs. At $ 23, this is not acceptable. That burger better be good and it’s a waste of time and money. Mac & Cheese: hard to mess this up, right? Well it’s easy if you throw some overcooked, tiny pieces of chewy lobster into it and then charge way too much for it. Meatballs: Dry and bland. Smothering them with BBQ sauce likely from a bottle purchased at Fairprice won’t save them either. Don’t bother. Cajun chicken: overcooked thin piece of thigh. No juiciness whatsoever. A very basic dish that you can find most places. Nothing interesting here. Mashed potatoes: these are a side with the cajun chicken and were actually quite tasty and with a good texture and the right amount of butter. Wings: These are decent. Not amazing, not bad. A safe item to order.

Came here for brunch with a friend this past weekend. Having just moved from NYC where Brunch on the weekends is practically a weekly ritual and many restaurants have perfected the art of cooking eggs, I’ve been feeling a little unfulfilled after each weekend without having brunch. My friend moved from NYC last year so we had high expectations. I ordered the Eggs Benny and having had an awful experience already with Eggs Benedict in Singapore, I was skeptical. My egg yolk was runny(good), the egg whites tasted like rubber as opposed to soft marshmallow(bad), home fries a.k.a. potatoes w/skins were flavorful(good), bread under the eggs was regular bread and not english muffin or something more creative like a waffle(yes, I’ve had eggs benedict with a waffle underneath), Salad had yummy dressing but it was all i remember of it, fruits was drenched in some sweet syrup(why would you do that!?!) Overall it was kind of disappointing. I did like my iced mocha though. Delicious cup of coffee. Maybe their dinner menu is better. I’d come back here with a good book or magazine on a lazy day to order an iced coffee drink b/c the vibe here is very New York-esque.

Cute place to hang out. This place is chic without being pretentious or too loud. Highly recommend the Lobster Mac ‘n Cheese. Its listed as an appetizer, but is heavy enough for a main dinner course. I’ll admit that I’ve even dreamt of juicy lobsters jumping gleefully in cheese after having this. The pasta with squid ink and salmon roe is excellent and fresh(no fishy dreams for this one). Their pies are great too and come with the freshest potato salad I’ve ever had. Service is nice and cheerful. My favorite go to place in Singapore. Also helps that I live 2 minutes away.

Five & Dime is a new eatery that has popped up in the River Valley area at the most unexpected spot next to some Chinese association or temple of sorts. The concept of Five & Dime is a modern take on the 60s diner experience without being saturated in nostalgia or overly trend based. Brunch is served from 10am to 2.30pm(kitchen closes at 2) and there is a selection of 9 mains– 4 breakfast dishes(eggs benny, eggs flor, french toast and pancakes), 2 sandwiches, 2 pasta and the regular F&C. Not a lot to choose from but a fair mix of breakfast foods and heavier lunch items. We had the Eggs Benny($ 16) — Poached Eggs with seared beef and the Mentaiko Pasta($ 22) — a spaghetti in creamy mentaiko sauce with chicken yakitori. Love the pasta(but it’s such a small portion). Not a fan of the soggy and bland eggs benny.

Cute little place we always pass when we drive by so thought we’d check it out for brunch. Turned up at around 1pm without any reservations and was told they were full but fortunately for us a table freed up after 15 minutes. I had my eye on the corned beef hash and eggs with breakfast potatoes. We also ordered buttermilk pancakes and calamari. The calamari tasted a bit odd and not very fresh while the buttermilk pancakes seemed a bit flat and the chicken chipolatas tasteless. The toast was a bit dry although I liked the corned beef hash. We got the iced mocha and iced chocolate and were not the least bit impressed. The desserts were pretty decent though. we really liked the Thai tea and white chocolate tart and the Earl Grey chocolate truffle tart though a tad rich was quite good as well. Service was pleasant and fairly efficient. Parking to be found easily behind the eatery. Really like the buzzing ambience but didn’t find the food to be all that great but might be back to try the dinner menu.

Overrated. Unfortunately that is the word to describe the place. I visited it a while back with a colleague after work. I’ve been reading rave reviews about the place, and also the photos looked amazing. The décor actually IS amazing. I really liked the black and white signboard, and the tiled floors with old school tables and chairs. They also have huge cutlery. Their cocktails are also supposedly award winning as they got a famous mixologist in the house to make them. For food however it is really just very average, and even to the point of gimmicky. We had the mentaiko pasta, the gyu pasta and the smoked duck salad. Only the salad was alright, while the mains were quite tasteless. For dessert we tried the You Tiao Churros, which is just you tiaos with chocolate sauce and ice cream. Gimmicky! We left with sore wallets and disappointed tummies.

A lovely little place located along River Valley road that I discovered one day while taking a stroll, Five and Dime is one of those places that have everything in place that makes it perfect for a lazy Sunday brunch with friends, or even alone. The décor is decently comfortable and there’s a sort of a indie meets cosy vibe about it. The staff are efficient and polite, and very well trained. Always on the lookout for nice places to chill at, Five and Dime fit all my requirements. I had the Eggs Benedict and I must say it’s worth it, though it is a little on the pricey side. I can’t really complain as the quality was really good. It comes with a strawberry, grape and banana salad at the side that really complemented the dish perfectly. You can always choose to add more items on like sausages if you like your meat, but for me, the eggs were perfect enough.
