with the set tied at 2 – 2 and serving for the game at 40 – 30, nik makes an explosive move at the net, pivoting on his right foot and pushing off with his left, right arm at full stretch in his bid to make the volley for a winner. little did he know that his, less than properly warmed up, left calf muscle at full extension was about to give way. as the ball contacted the sweet spot on his racket, he felt a sharp pop in his left calf and collapsed under his own weight and momentum. the cramp like tightness and pain left him clutching his calf and grimacing on the ground fast forward a few hours later, the agonizingly long A&E visit at TTSH was finally over with an MC in hand and a referral letter to see a specialist in their sports medicine department scheduled for 12 Jan 2015! what??? that’s in a month’s time!!! left to his own devices, he decided that he needs to get well before 2015 began! so, off he went to see a private specialist and was immediately referred to DBC for his physiotherapy! alas, they started on the wrong foot. his first appointment left him waiting more than 45mins before he was attended to by elsa. she was rather apologetic and explained that another patient was late and it caused a snowballing delay for the rest of the day’s appointments. however, all was forgotten when her magical touches made his injured calf instantly feel better. with each session, in a clean and well equipped homely space, the sore tender calf, slowly but surely, returned to it’s original size. with each session, the strict and targeted exercises, under pauline’s and esther’s ever watchful eyes and friendly banter, returned a calf, and it’s surrounding muscles, more sculpted and toned. with each session, the simple, gradual care, under structured and personalized supervision, returned a healed calf and it’s hope of playing tennis again. 6 X 1hr sessions later and $ 1200 poorer, he is back to his normal royal gait. special thanks must go to pauline, esther and elsa, the non clock watching angels heaven send to nurse his leg! p. s. just in case you were wondering, nik did win that point, that game and therefore his pain was not in vain!:)
