Chijmes

Food was mediocre. Service was not good. They served everyone’s dinners at different times. By the time everyone’s meals came mine was cold. But they did give us a free beer for the inconvenience.

Chijmes ain’t so bad. Sure, it may look a bit atas and super expatty, but you can’t deny that it’s a beautiful building in the heart of Singapore’s CBD. Location-​wise, it’s within walking distance to Bras Basah MRT and City Hall MRT.
They are still in the midst of doing renovations at the time of this review, but the parts that they have finished renovating look pretty sweet. They did a good job of maintaining the exterior, while adding more modern touches and pizzazz to really make it a nightlife and restaurant destination.
I haven’t tried a lot of the new establishments that have popped up, but I can tell you that I liked Tonzaemon by Ma Maison and that I occasionally hang out at Dimbulah during the week for coffee and free wifi.
A lot of the new bars are really trying promote themselves, so it might be worth it to stop by after work to see if they have any decent happy hour deals. If the weather is perfect, the alfresco vibe makes it a great spot to unwind!

I think of the great things about Singapore is building preservation. CHIJMES is another one of them. Formerly a convent, it is converted to a destination of restaurants and bars. Even if the dining and drinking options there don’t appeal to you, it makes a wonderful visit for how the convent architecture is now integrated into this night time destination which also means it’s perfect for a quick photography stop.

For the first two months I lived in Singapore, I often walked by Chijmes. I thought it was just a restaurant but I didn’t know what kind.
It wasn’t until a little later that I actually learned that Chijmes was actually a destination with a number of bars and restaurants.
It has a bit of the feel of a European square. Something that I do not see anywhere else in Singapore.
I’ve been to a number of restaurants in Chijmes.
Sun Japanese Dining (good)
Tatsu Sushi (very good)
Seoul Korean Charcoal BBQ Restaurant (not so good)
Gyu Kaku (very good)
There is a wide range of other restaurants spanning numerous cuisines. There is also a number of bars including a specialty whiskey bar. There are also events at Harry’s where sports are shown on a very large screen.
For bars, I quite like Cuscaden. It is a very laid back place to have a drink and chat with a friend or two. They often have live music but it isn’t so loud that it is intrusive.
Overall — I think Chijmes is worth exploring. There are definitely some very good restaurants there.

The place used to be very original and super cool, but now it’s just really commercial and the buzz of the place is not the same as what it used to be. It still gets quite a bit of foreigners and tourists who visit — but a lot of locals do not dig Chimes as much as they used to.
What I Love: There is a nice social area inside — a square — where you can sit and people watch — and that area is kinda nice. The vibe during festivals and celebrations can be kinda fun — like during Superbowl or Christmas. There’s a Brazilian restaurant that is Buffet style and serves quite a bit of meat. Reasonably priced — it’s got quite a few interesting menu options.
What I Don’t Love: The restaurants are generally pricey — but they’ve become kinda commercial and blah — that I don’t really like going there anymore. It’s just not as fun and funky as it used to be.

Das Chijmes ist ein geschichtsträchtiger Ort in Singapur und war früher ein katholisches Kloster des Ordens Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus in Singapur. Sowohl das Hauptgebäude des Klosters Caldwell House als auch die Klosterkapelle Chijmes Hall wurden zu Nationaldenkmälern deklariert.
Heute ist dieser Heilige Ort ein beliebter Treffpunkt der Partyszene. Verschiedene Restaurants und Bars befinden sich im Garten des Komplexes. Zum Abendessen und zum Feiern ein idealer Ort.
Dennoch ist dieser Ort tagsüber ein Ort der Ruhe und lädt ein, dem Grossstatstress für ein paar Stunden zu entfliehen. Man kann z.B. Kunstgalerien besichtigen oder Kunsthandwerk erwerben.
