Bottle Tree Park is an enclave hidden away from the bustling city. Located in Yishun(just a few minutes walk away from the MRT station), this park boosts its a few of its eponymous trees and a lake. Other than the usual prawning and dining spots, take the chance to check out Ground-up Initiative(GUI ), a non-profit venture that aims to connect people with their roots. GUI organises frequent activities that allows people to step outside of their technology and efficiency driven universe for a change. Come here as a volunteer and be welcomed immediately into their world — there are tons to experience here like farming and DIY toy-making. Recently, they organised a five-month long Heritage Kampung carnival that celebrated Singapore’s kampung past, something that was quickly becoming a fading memory in the consciousness of our people. I’ve attended these activities as a volunteer and guest, and would definitely encourage anyone who is sick of their cubicle jobs to come here for a breath of fresh air! Spaces like Bottle Tree Park are very important for building memories among our people that does not involve glitzy shopping malls and new gadgets. May it always stay the same!

My junior college classmates and I happened to pass by Bottle Tree Park after a school event at the reservoir nearby. It hadn’t been open for long. Curious, we stepped in and were taken in with this rustic place. We thought it was simply a park for residents to «stone». We didn’t expect to find many other attractions within the park. There were many kids having fun trying to catch small fish in the pond. The sight reminded me of my own parents’ stories of them fishing in longkangs as kids! *Guffaws* There was paintball but we skipped that since my friends couldn’t afford it. We decided to go prawning instead and were pleased to have caught some pretty big ones. It got dark afterwards, so we left after a last stroll by the bigger fishing pond. Bottle Tree Park is a very family-friendly place. Plus, it’s so much more accessible than the farms in Lim Chu Kang.
